On two evenings on January 18 and 19, 2018, RM/Sotheby's invited its wealthy customers to the Arizona Bitmore Resort & Spa to sell 126 cars, a tractor and a boat. The interested parties and bidders came in droves, after all there was an interesting selection of vehicles and automobilia to buy. There was no shortage of money either, as demonstrated by the fact that USD 28,800 was paid for a Ferrari 250 GTO mudguard, well above the estimated value of around USD 15,000.

Disappointment?
USD 65 million was expected as the total proceeds, so the USD 36 million actually achieved was disappointing at first glance. In fact, however, the sales rate was a good 87%, which was certainly also due to the high proportion of lots without a reserve price, which amounted to around 70%. The fact that the average selling price was USD 325,000 instead of USD 500,000 was due to the fact that some of the 11 unsold cars were among the most expensive.
Jaguar D-Type not sold
The 1954 Jaguar D-Type was estimated at USD 12 to 15 million. This was not unrealistic; after all, "OKV 2" was one of five works cars that had taken part in Le Mans several times in 1954. Racing legends such as Stirling Moss and Mike Hawthorn took turns at the wheel. A largely complete history and a successful restoration raised expectations.
But the bidders did not want to go over USD 9.8 million, which was not enough for the consignor, no doubt influenced by the private driver D-Type offered at Gooding for almost as much money. Not sold!
American high-flyers
A surprisingly large number of American cars were among the cars that sold well above their estimated value, with a good third of the lots selling for more than expected.
A 1977 International Scout II Traveler Custom sold for USD 128,800 (161% of the estimate), while the 1967 Meyers Manx DualSport S by Mendeola Motors fetched USD 75,600 (144%).
The 1968 Shelby 427 Cobra 'Semi-Competition' was worth USD 2.95 million (EUR 2.42 million, CHF 2.83 million) to the buyer, while the estimate had been "only" USD 2 to 2.4 million.
The Tucker 48, once owned by the company founder himself and shown in the best light in the Coppola film, found new hands for USD 1.8 million (estimate USD 1.25 to 1.5 million).
However, there were also European cars that exceeded their estimated value, such as the 1934 Austin Heavy 12-4 cab, which sold for 2.3 times its estimate, or the 1926 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost Tilbury Sedan, which surprised with USD 131,600, i.e. 1.65 times its estimate.
An Austin-Healey 100 M "Le Mans" from 1956 also proved at USD 218,400 (EUR 179,016, CHF 210,000) that there is still room for improvement with the classic four-cylinder Healey.
A BMW 2002 Turbo from 1974 sold for an impressive USD 145,600 (EUR 119,344, CHF 140,000), a Bugatti EB110 GT from 1993 for USD 967,500 (EUR 793,033, CHF 930,288).
Packard in low demand
With eleven pre-war Packards, RM presented an interesting cross-section of these elegant American luxury vehicles. However, only nine of them were sold and they only fetched 85 percent of the median estimate, with prices ranging from 75 to 95 percent.
The Graber-bodied Packard Eight from 1933 and the most expensive open Packard Twelve Touring with Brunn bodywork from 1932 could not be sold, the others were sold for prices between USD 33,600 and 445,000.
Disappointing Ferrari sports cars
20 Ferrari sports cars (including two Dino) went under the hammer at the Arizona Bitmore, almost a third of which (the 250 GT Boano Coupé from 1957, a 330 GTC from 1966, a 330 GTS from 1967, a 430 Scuderia from 2008, a 512 TR from 1992 and a 550 Barchetta from 2001) failed to sell.
The average prices of the Ferraris sold also failed to meet expectations, with 84 percent of the median estimate being paid on average (even after offsetting the commission).
However, this was also due to the very high estimates. For example, the 1969 Dino 206 GT should have fetched USD 625,000 to 825,000, but it was sold for USD 423,000 (EUR 346,721, CHF 406,731), i.e. 58 percent of the estimate.
The beautiful Ferrari 212 Inter Ghia Coupé from 1952 was valued at USD 1.6 to 2 million; the new owner had to pay USD 1.19 million (EUR 973,361, CHF 1.14 million).
However, this should not obscure the fact that the sports cars from Maranello also fetched impressive prices: a Ferrari 250 GT Lusso from 1964, for example, went for USD 1.68 million (EUR 1.38 million, CHF 1.62 million), while a Ferrari 330 GTC from 1967 found its way into a new garage for USD 555,000 (EUR 454,918, CHF 533,564).
Solid results for the super classics
Of course, RM/Sotheby's was able to offer a whole range of other super classics in addition to the Ferrari sports cars, which achieved solid results on average.
The Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster from 1957, for example, sold for USD 1.08 million (EUR 887,705, CHF 1.04 million), while the three Jaguar E-Type Roadsters from Series 1 built between 1962 and 1966 fetched between USD 193,200 and 224,000.
The Toyota 2000 GT from 1967 made the buyer USD 665,000 (EUR 545,082, CHF 639,423) poorer, while the Porsche 959 "Komfort" from 1987 was valued by the market at USD 1.16 million (EUR 950,820, CHF 1.12 million).
Overall, there is nothing to complain about, even if not every car achieved a new auction record. The price and bidding levels at the Arizona Bitmore may not have quite matched the excesses of two or three years ago, but the differences were small and the interest on site was certainly high.
Vehicles offered and sold
The following table lists all the vehicles on offer with estimated prices in USD and selling prices in USD, EUR and CHF. The conversion was made at the daily exchange rate (1 EUR = 1.22 USD, 1 CHF = 1.04 USD). The "NoR" column indicates vehicles offered without a minimum price with "yes". In the "% Est" column, the sales price is compared with the average estimated value. All information without guarantee.
