As every year, the auctions around Scottsdale/Phoenix in Arizona kick off the new auction year. And like every year, the big companies have put together an impressive line-up of cars, and RM/Sotheby's is no exception.
At least 160 cars in 1:1 scale, plus a few scaled-down versions and a few Automobila are to find new hands at the Arizona Bitmore on January 17 and 18.
The total value of the vehicles is around USD 77 million. Each car is therefore expected to fetch around USD 481,200 (EUR 423,445, CHF 476,376). 98 lots (61%) will be auctioned without a reserve price.
Porsche and Ferrari in the lead
With 24 Porsche (incl. tractor) and 21 Ferrari (incl. a Dino 246 GT), the two sports car brands are supplying the largest contingents.
This is followed by Rolls-Royce with 16 vehicles, Ford with 10 and Bentley and Mercedes-Benz with nine cars.
Among the brands represented, however, there are also many companies that have long since disappeared, such as Lone Star, Kaiser-Darrin and Tucker, each with one vehicle.
Over 50 years old on average
The average age is 52 years, which is due to the surprisingly large pre-war selection of 29 cars (up to and including 1942).
At the same time, "only" 21 cars built in 2000 and later will go under the hammer, most of them less than ten years old.
27 fifties and 31 sixties classics make up the largest age groups.
Many super classics
With so many Porsches and Ferraris under the hammer, it goes without saying that even without a Lamborghini and with only one Maserati, there is a huge arsenal of super classics waiting for new owners.
From Ferrari alone, four Daytonas, including two coupés, an original Spider (USD 2.2 to 2.6 million) and the NART Spider by Michelotti (for USD 600,000 to 650,000) are in the starting blocks.
There is also a 330 GTS from 1967 (USD 2.2 to 2.6 million), a 288 GTO from 1985 (USD 3.2 to 3.6 million), a 275 GTB/4 from 1967 (USD 2.8 to 3.2 million) and a 250 GT Coupé Speciale Pinin Farina from 1957 (USD 11 to 13 million), as well as an almost new LaFerrari Aperta (USD 6.5 to 8.5 million). And that's not even the half of it.
One Mercedes-Benz 300 SL each as a Gullwing and Roadster are of course a must in Phoenix, USD 1.1 to 1.4 million have been set.
Three Jaguar E-Types, two from the first and one from the second series, were also presented to the public. The estimated prices vary between USD 110,000 and 275,000.
There are also three Shelby, two De Tomaso Pantera and, of course, the entire phalanx of Porsche sports cars, including a 911 Carrera RS 2.7 from 1973 (USD 400,000 to 500,000) and a 356 A Speedster from 1958 (USD 300,000 to 400,000). However, the newer Porsches, including a Sport Classic from 2010 or a GT2 RS from 2018, are expected to realize even higher prices.
The two Ford RS200s and the two AC Aces should also be counted among the super classics.
Impressive Rolls and Bentley line-up
The Rolls-Royce and Bentley range is broad and also impressive in terms of numbers, covering a wide spectrum not only in terms of age, but also in terms of coachbuilders and shapes.
Two Vector prototypes
The two Vector prototypes WX-3 as Coupé and Roadster from 1993, which caused a sensation at the Geneva Motor Show in 1992 and 1993 with around 1000 hp and great colors, are certainly something special.
The two one-offs are now to be sold to new collectors for between USD 450,000 and 550,000 each. In terms of price, the 25 cars with valuations between USD 60,000 and 1.5 million also leave plenty of flexibility for a wide range of tastes and budgets.
In addition to the two super sports cars from the USA, there is also a considerable range of vehicles from Ford, Pierce-Arrow and so on, as well as several Corvettes.
Cheap cars too
Around 25 cars are expected to leave the auction for prices in the five-figure range. It is guaranteed that they will be sold, after all, they will go under the hammer without a minimum price.
So if you are looking for a VW 181 from 1974 (in pretty wild condition) or an Arcura NSX (USD 70,000 to 80,000, you can get your hands on it here.
However, it should be noted that, as always, the bidder surcharges and, depending on the case, transportation and customs/tax costs will be added to the hammer prices. So if you calculate carefully, you can add a third and determine your personal limit on this basis.
Further information and pictures of the individual vehicles can be found at RM/Sotheby's.
