Probably the greatest adventure in historic rallying - the Peking to Paris Motor Challenge 2016 - covers over 14,000 km in a good 30 days, over all kinds of roads and through the most diverse cultures and topographies.
On the route from 1907
The 6th P2P Motor Challenge starts on Sunday, June 12, 2016 at the Great Wall of China in Beijing and ends on July 17, 2016 with the entry into Paris and the crossing of the finish line at Place Vendome. From Beijing, a 14,000 km rally lies ahead of the 110 or so crews, for whom one of the greatest challenges in rallying begins on June 12.
The participants will cross a total of 11 countries on the traditional and original rally route from 1907. From Beijing, they will continue through the Mongolian Gobi Desert, Russia and Belarus before reaching Europe to tackle the final stretch through Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Italy, Switzerland and France to the center of Paris.
Participants from 24 countries
More participants have registered for the 2016 rally than ever before. The vehicles will compete in two different categories. Either in the Vintage class with vehicles built up to 1941, such as the Chrysler of the Dillier team from Central Switzerland, or in the Classic category, in which vehicles built before 1975 can start. Around 60 vehicles will be competing in the Classic category and around 50 teams in the Vintage class, including the winners of the 2010 and 2013 Challenge, Phil Garratt and Kieron Brown.
In the Classic category this year, all eyes will be on the winner of the 2013 Motor Challenge and also the oldest participant in the event, Gerry Crown from Australia in his 1974 Leyland P74. Gerry is already 84 years old and has taken part in all five previous Challenges, making this year his sixth time in the epic adventure.
As rally director Fred Gallagher says: "There are cars from over 30 different marques and drivers from 24 different countries on the start list. The Peking to Paris Motor Challenge is truly a global event where the cars, as well as their drivers and co-drivers, will be pushed to their limits."
