Following in the footsteps of the 1972 Olympic Rally, 50 years later, from August 8 to 13, 2022, a rally entourage will once again set off from Kiel to Munich. The 197 vehicles in the 2022 Olympic Rally Revival will cover a total distance of 2252 kilometers from the sailing areas off Kiel to the Olympic Stadium in Munich. This is significantly less than the 3371 kilometers that had to be completed in 1972 with just one overnight break. But it is still a considerable challenge for the historic vehicles and their crews.
The 1972 Olympic Rally also marked the start of the international career of Walter Röhrl, who later became world rally champion. The revival has great significance for him: "I'm looking forward to meeting many friends and former competitors. We will spend a wonderful week together." One of the competitors is Konrad Schmidt, who finished sixth in the 1975 German Rally Championship in an Opel Ascona built by Reinhard Hainbach. Schmidt's sons will drive the Hainbach Ascona from Kiel to Munich in the revival. The original driver and builder will be there as mechanics.
The revival of the Olympic Rally is "part of the official supporting events for the 50th anniversary of the Olympic Games in Munich" organized by the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB). Further information such as the route and timetable can be found at www.olympiarallye72.com.
