I didn't know what to expect when I pulled the starter button on the MGA Roadster and the little British sports car came to life. But the first few kilometers through Porto made it clear: this classic car trip would be different. More intense. More personal. Closer to what traveling is all about. As we left the city behind us and drove towards the course of the Douro river, I quickly realized why this valley is one of the most beautiful wine-growing landscapes in Europe. What impressed me most was the diversity that I experienced on this trip. The terraced vineyards that climb up the slopes like artistic sculptures. Special moments - from ancient rock engravings to baroque palaces
A highlight for me was the visit to Vila Nova de Foz Côa. Thousands of years old rock engravings, open in the valley, as if the people back then had known that their art would one day be rediscovered. Horses, aurochs, goats - lines, simple and yet full of energy. A place that makes you stop and pause.
Another memorable moment was a private dinner that Vintage Tours organized for us in the historic kitchen of the Palácio de Mateus. This baroque palace is a jewel - and suddenly you're sitting here, under old stone arches and in front of a huge fireplace, tasting typical regional cuisine with a glass of wine. Not a tourist in sight. This experience was truly unique.
And of course we were also impressed by the Palácio do Freixo in Porto, a work by Nicolau Nasoni - a baroque masterpiece and a witness to the wealth of this region in the 18th century.

What impressed me the most: How much groundwork went into this tour. Matthias told us that they had driven hundreds of kilometers themselves several times to develop a route that follows the river, even in places where there is actually no road directly on the river. Every day ended in a hotel that was more than just a place to sleep. Boutique hotels and quintas in the middle of the wine landscape. With pools, views over the terraces, fine cuisine and wines that are produced right where you are staying. It felt like being immersed in the Douro Valley - not just through the streets, but also through its hospitality.
Spring or fall - the Douro tells two stories
I was lucky enough to experience the Douro Valley twice. Once in spring, when almond and cherry trees are in bloom and a delicate green covers the hills. The light is clear, the wind fresh - perfect for a drive in a British roadster. And once in the fall, when the vine leaves glowed red and the whole valley looked like it was on fire. The light was softer, gentler, almost golden.
Both seasons were magical - and both completely different. So when someone asks me when is the best time for a vintage tour, I say: "Spring for the lightness. Autumn for depth. And both for unforgettable moments."

At the end of this classic car trip, I had the feeling that I had really experienced the Douro Valley. Not just seen it. The MGA Roadster, the landscape, the people, the light - everything came together to create a story that I will tell for a long time to come.
