Oldtimer in Obwalden is a highly unusual classic car gathering, as it mobilizes entire villages and regions. Organized as a huge party that is fun with and without your own old means of transport - cars, steam cars, trucks, buses, post buses, tractors, motorcycles, scooters, mopeds and bicycles are all there - the O-iO, as it is called for short, attracts hundreds of classic cars and masses of visitors year after year.
It's that time again on May 19/20, 2018. The participants will hopefully meet in Sarnen in the canton of Obwalden in fine weather.
The classic cars are expected in the village center of Sarnen from 10:00 and will be lined up according to the instructions of the O-iO traffic team. From 10:30 the participants are invited to an aperitif, and from 11:15 there will be a parade of a wide variety of two and four-wheeled vehicles, including soapboxes. The latter, specially built as a joint project by the Sarnen school and trade, will also compete against each other in a specially organized race, just like in the old days.
Between 13:45 and 14:45 the popular passenger rides in the village are planned, between 15:15 and 17:00 the Saturday ride will start, while those who stay in Sarnen can enjoy themselves in other ways.
Cultural elements have always been part of the classic car meeting in Obwalden. In the cultural heritage year 2018, the Victorian way of life and the highly interesting steampunk movement will be at the center of interest. Among others, Raphaelius Grässer will be on site with his incredible machines, which look like relics from a bygone era, and will present his airship once every hour at the "Centrum Belle Epoque" in the Hotel Metzgern. There will also be an exhibition of fashion and accessories, including a fashion show. And at 15:15, it's time for the Sarnen "Teatime" supplemented by a Thé dansant with an active gramophone.
The evening ends in Sarnen, when the vehicles are safely parked in the guarded underground garages.
On Saturday, the classic car drivers will then move to Engelberg, where they will find an elegant setting in the village center and the spa gardens.
A cultural program is also offered in Engelberg, but you can also simply relax with petrol talks and individual catering until the journey home begins again.
