For the first time, the Oldtimer Galerie Toffen is pitching its tents in Gstaad to auction 44 automobiles (including 1 tractor). And this can be understood quite literally, as a tent actually serves as the auction room. As there is not unlimited space inside, the specialists from the Oldtimer Gallery had to limit themselves to just over 40 vehicles, even though many more sellers would have been willing to bring their cars to the well-known winter meeting place of Gstaad.
Gstaad is also of international interest thanks to James Bond, firstly because Roger Moore liked to spend time there and secondly because the town has also featured in other Bond films. It's no coincidence that some Bond memorabilia will be going under the hammer in front of the cars.
Selection for the connoisseur
Anyone leafing through the catalog will immediately recognize that the Gstaad selection is something for the connoisseur. There is a special story to tell about each car. Hardly any car comes off the shelf, hardly any can be characterized at a glance.
Seven decades of automotive engineering come together, 22 car brands in total. And the exclusivity is naturally also reflected in the price: on average, the 42 vehicles, one of which is a tractor, are estimated to be worth around CHF 336,000 or EUR 301,000, with the extremes ranging from CHF 32'000 to 38,000 for a Morris Mini Traveller from 1966 and a Ferrari 250 GT Boano with aluminum bodywork from 1957, whose estimated value is not officially stated, but can be assumed to be around CHF 1.5 to 2 million. The re-registered McLaren P1 from 2015 is expected to be even more expensive (CHF 2.3 to 2.5 million).
Because space is also limited for the public, the coveted access to the auction is limited and also somewhat more expensive than usual.
David Bowie's Volvo
Almost at the end of the auction, a car will go under the hammer that may not formally be one of the most beautiful creations of all time, but which has already caused quite a stir thanks to its prominent owner: the Volvo 262C from 1981.
The Bertone coupé in black belonged to David Bowie, who drove it for several years in Switzerland. However, with an estimated price of CHF 65,000 to 75,000, this fact is also amply taken into account. Whether fans are willing to pay the celebrity premium will be revealed on December 29, 2017.
Bond sends his regards
The most famous James Bond car is known to be the Aston Martin DB5.
Although the Oldtimer Galerie in Gstaad does not have one of these in stock, it does have the predecessors DB2, DB 2/4 Mk III and a DB 4 Series III, all with estimated values between CHF 365,000 and 550,000.
However, Bond actually drove the BMW Z8 in a movie. The 2001 model on offer has the same color as the film car and is offered for CHF 240,000 to 260,000.
Special Jaguar selection
The best-represented brand in Gstaad is Jaguar. Seven sports cars from the Coventry-based company are up for bidding, starting with an SS 100 from 1937 (estimated price CHF 440,000 to 480,000).
The XK line is completed by an XK120 Cabriolet with Autenrieth bodywork from 1951 (CHF 225,000 to 250,000), an XK 140 DHC from 1956 (CHF 160'000 to 180,000) and the very special one-off XK 150 station wagon from 1959, known as the "Tow Car" (CHF 210,000 to 230,000).
Of course, the E-Type is not missing either, offered as a Series 1 Flat-Floor Coupé from 1961 (CHF 230,000 to 250,000) and a Series 1 Racing Coupé from 1963 (CHF 220,000 to 235,000).
The 1993 Jaguar XJ 220, estimated at CHF 420,000 to 460,000, is almost youthful in comparison.
Tractor and family GT from Lamborghini
The sports car manufacturer Lamborghini also built tractors, one of which is being sold in Gstaad alongside a four-seater 400 GT Espada from the second series from 1973.
While the tractor would still be affordable for some at CHF 38,000 to 52,000, the CHF 125,000 to 145,000 for the GT coupé would require larger provisions.
Aurelia triple
It is certainly unusual to come across three Aurelia models from Lancia at one auction. But the three models on offer are also special, which can be said in particular of the 1952 Vignale Coupé B52, which owes its design to Giovanni Michelotti.
At CHF 750,000 to 850,000, this handsome coupé, which was only built once in this version (with sliding roof), also calls for a correspondingly large wallet.
Aurelia driving is cheaper with the pretty B20S GT Coupé of the 6th series from 1957 (CHF 145,000 to 165,000) or the elegant B24S Convertibile from 1956 (CHF 430,000 to 470,000).
Rare sports cars from Alfa Romeo
Both the Alfa Romeo Giulia SS from 1964 and the Alfa Romeo Montreal from 1973 made heads turn and dreams come true when they appeared at motor shows around the world.
In the case of the Giulia, it is the Scaglione bodywork and the twin-camshaft four-cylinder engine that will generate enthusiasm and hopefully bids between CHF 155,000 and 175,000, while the Montreal's civilized V8 racing engine and Bertone bodywork (CHF 85,000 to 100,000) will do the same.
Three times plastic
While most of the cars have bodies made of sheet steel or aluminum, there are also three vehicles with plastic bodies. This has been the rule for all Corvettes to date, including the two Corvette models on offer, C1 (CHF 105,000 to 115,000) and C2 Split Window (CHF 125,000 to 145,000).
It is somewhat less well known that the Ferrari 308 GTB also originally had a polyester body and was therefore called "Vetroresina". The lightweight and rare Ferrari coupé from 1977 is estimated at CHF 180,000 to 195,000.
Exotic cars from Italy
The exotic cars include four sports cars with Italian roots. One of these is the Ferrari 250 GT Boano from 1957 with a flat aluminum coupé body.
Then the two De Tomaso Pantera, one a road-going Pantera L (CHF 115,000 to 125,000), the other a Group 5 racing car (CHF 475,000 to 525,000), once built in the factory for a Swiss owner.
Almost more exotic is the Iso Rivolta Lele from 1972, which is on the lot list for CHF 145,000 to 155,000.
SL for smaller and larger budgets
Of course, both the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL and the 190 SL are not to be missed. The former dates back to 1958 and is a roadster.
Surprisingly, it is being offered without a reserve price, but the estimated value of CHF 1.1 to 1.2 million takes away any hope of a bargain.
The 190 SL from 1962 is being offered at a much lower price, with an estimate of CHF 125,000 to 135,000.
44 cars, an exclusive setting and only two days left until 2018 - it will be interesting to see how the auction in Gstaad goes on December 29.
As always, the online catalog of the Oldtimer Galerie Toffen shows additional pictures and explanations of the individual vehicles.

The following table lists all the vehicles on offer with estimated prices in CHF and EUR. The conversion was made at the daily exchange rate (1 CHF = 0.85 EUR). Lot 143 is the only vehicle being auctioned without a reserve price. All information without guarantee.
