"Grand Basel is not just another motor show," explains Global Director Mark Backé, who created the Grand Basel concept. "Rather, it is an exclusive show for high-end automobiles - past, present and future. Grand Basel appeals to international connoisseurs, experts and collectors with the highest standards - and anyone interested in automotive aesthetics, technical virtuosity, art and culture."
Models on display include Porsche. Lancia, Cisitalia, Lamborghini and many other car manufacturers, as well as concept cars and prototypes!
Leading experts on the Board of Trustees Grand Basel 2018 is supported by some of the most influential personalities in the automotive world. Paolo Tumminelli has appointed a Board of Trustees that works independently and guarantees the highest quality standards. Tumminelli, as head of the board of trustees, is still keeping a lid on the names. These will be published at a later date. "We see it as our task to establish the automobile as a cultural asset with Grand Basel," says Tumminelli. He is the director of the Goodbrands Institute, author and professor at the Faculty of Cultural Sciences at TH Köln and developed the cultural concept of Grand Basel.
Unique exhibition concept
The show presents exceptional automobiles in an exceptional setting: The exhibition design by Berlin design agency Blue Scope is a bold break with the usually nostalgic ambience of conventional car shows and allows the objects to be staged and viewed in the quality of modern museums.
Grand Basel takes up the architecture of the Basel exhibition building by Herzog & de Meuron and cleverly incorporates vehicle presentations and catering outlets with various lounges around the iconic atrium of Hall 1.
Art and automobile brought together
Car enthusiast and award-winning actor Idris Elba explained in a film for Grand Basel what his "lifelong passion" for cars is all about.
In the film, Idris explains the characteristics that make cars a masterpiece and seeks answers to the question of what gives a car its soul. The setting of the film is of particular importance, as it was shot in the iconic Lingotto car factory in Turin.
The viewer is thus shown the connection between cars and art, design, architecture and lifestyle. Idris shows the emotional influences of a car, including one of his first automotive memories in which he simulates driving himself in the back seat of his parents' car.
Similar to the film, visitors to Grand Basel between September 6 and 9, 2018 will discover the approximately one hundred automotive sculptures on display.
Further information can be found on the event website, where tickets can also be ordered.
