The RM/Sotheby's auction will take place at the Grimaldi Forum in Monaco on May 14, 2022. 67 vehicles, including a boat and a motorcycle, are waiting and hoping for new owners on the occasion of the Grand Prix Historique, alongside a number of automobilia.
The vehicles on offer have been estimated at EUR 45.5 million, so just under EUR 680,000 is expected per lot. On average, the vehicles are almost 42 years old and 21 percent of them will be auctioned without a reserve price.
Ferrari, Lamborghini and Porsche
Three major sports car brands - Ferrari, Lamborghini and Porsche - account for half of the lots; Ferrari alone is represented with 20 cars, Lamborghini and Porsche with seven each.
All other brands come in no more than double the number of vehicles, and many of them only have one vehicle for sale.
One of four Ferrari 340 MM Spiders still in existence
10 Ferrari 344 MM were built by Ferrari, only four 340 MM with Vignale-Barchetta bodywork have survived. In the mid-fifties, the 300 hp sports car was almost unbeatable.
The car on offer with chassis 0350AM does not have a spectacular racing history, even though it was actively used at the time. However, it received an award at Pebble Beach 2015 and can certainly be used almost anywhere where fast cars are on the grid. At EUR 6 to 8 million, it is the most expensive car in the auction.
A very rare Delahaye Coupé
The oldest car in the auction is a 1947 Delahaye 135 MS with Chapron coupé bodywork, which the first owner Louis Chiron personally specified and drove for almost five years.
The Bugatti racing driver Chiron probably had a foot-operated horn installed. The fully restored car is now valued at between EUR 325,000 and 375,000.
Lamborghini selection
After all, there are seven Lamborghinis up for bid in Monaco.
The spearhead here is certainly a Lamborghini Miura P400 SV from 1971, which was estimated at EUR 2.2 to 2.6 million.
The oldest Lambo is a 400 GT 2+2 from 1967, for which EUR 300,000 to 350,000 is due.
There is also a Countach, two Diablo, a Gallardo and an LM002, so there is no shortage of choice here either.
Highly rated super classics and racing cars
In addition to the aforementioned Ferrari and Lamborghini, there are ...
... also to buy a BMW 507 from 1958, it is said to cost EUR 2.1 to 2.5 million.
An original Ferrari 365 GTS/4 Daytona Spider from 1973 is unlikely to go to a new owner for less, with an expected price of EUR 2 to 2.2 million.
The breathtakingly beautiful Alfa Romeo Tipo 33/3 racing car from 1969 was estimated at EUR 1.7 to 2.1 million. The car is said to have finished second in the 1970 24 Hours of Le Mans for a large part of the race with Nanni Galli and Rolf Stommelen.
Even more expensive than the Alfa is a Jaguar XKR-9 from 1988. However, winning the 24 Hours of Daytona in 1990 is also an achievement worth remembering. The car was driven by Alan Jones, Jan Lammers, and Andy Wallace. EUR 1.9 to 2.4 million should be enough for the purchase.
Mention should also be made of a magnificent Iso Grifo A3/C from 1965, which is available for EUR 1.55 to 1.75 million. This car is said to be the last A/3 Stradale built and was exhibited at the Paris Motor Show in 1965.
The Mansell cars
Nigel Mansell was not only a talented and extremely fast racing driver, he also had a special taste in cars.
In addition to a Ferrari F40, which is not up for discussion here, he also drove a 1991 Birkin Seven Sprint, which is a dead ringer for the Lotus Super Seven and is now being offered for EUR 10,000 to 15,000 (no reserve).
Even more exotic, however, is an iC Modulo M89 from 1990, a three-wheeler with a BMW K75S engine and two seats one behind the other. This somewhat misshapen-looking funmobile is now said to cost between EUR 5000 and 25,000, but Mansell did not cover 4000 km with it.
The performance of the Formula 1 cars also on offer, including a Williams FW14 from 1991 and a Ferrari 640 from 1989, was probably even better. EUR 2.5 to 5 million was set for the Ferrari and EUR 1.5 to 3 million for the Williams.
The other Etceterini
There are also a few other trouvailles that will go under the hammer on May 14, 2022.
Lot 121, a lime green Porsche 928 with a green interior and Pasha pattern, is being offered without a reserve price and is expected to fetch between EUR 40,000 and 60,000.
For EUR 70,000 to 100,000 you can buy a Citroën 2 CV 4x4 "Sahara" from 1964, for a little more you can buy a restoration object in the form of a Porsche 356 A 1600 Cabriolet from 1956.
An Isdera Spider 036i from 1989, which is powered by a (retrofitted) 3.6-liter Mercedes-Benz AMG engine and is best driven with a helmet, is said to cost between EUR 325,000 and 375,000.
The 1980 Renault 5 Turbo on offer is said to be the first R5 in Group 4 trim built for homologation and driven by Jean Ragnotti in the 1980 Tour Auto and Tour de Corse. EUR 350,000 to 450,000 are due here.
Among the 67 vehicles there are a few more super classics and trouvailles, more details can be found on the RM/Sotheby's website.
