The September issue of Auto Bild klassik is here with lots of new topics. These include a driving fun competition, an update on the restoration of Elvis' BMW, a preview of the ninth Hamburg-Berlin Classic and much more.
A comparison of the classics
Driving pleasure is a very subjective thing and yet nine classic cars were tested in this respect. The Renault 5 Turbo 1, Porsche 911 Carrera RS, Chevy Corvette C2 Sting Ray, Ford Cortina Lotus Mk I, BMW M3, Ferrari 512 BBi, Audi V8 DTM, Honda CRX and Lotus Super Seven compete against each other in the driving fun competition on the Biester Berg. Which one will come out on top in the end?
What only the Italians can do
A handful of Italian oldies are put under the microscope. The Fiat 1100, Bizzarini GT 5300 Straka, Lancia 2000, Alfa Romeo Alfasud Ti and Maserati Ghibli are just a few of the car stories from the south.
A portrait of Günther Kaufmann
He trained as a body builder at the age of 15. With this foundation, Günther Kaufmann was responsible for the Porsche 914, VW Scirocco I and many other projects for Volkswagen.
Hamburg-Berlin Classic
The ninth Hamburg-Berlin-Klassik is just around the corner. On August 25, 180 classic and vintage cars will make their way from Hamburg to Berlin. The participants will take three days to enjoy the route with its many highlights.
The Mercedes that looks like a Rolls-Royce
At the request of a Dutchman, a coupé by Pininfarina was completed on the floor assembly of the German luxury saloon. What remained a one-off at Mercedes looks strikingly similar to the coupé shape from Rolls-Royce called Camargue.
What it looks like under the paint
Until now, classic car buyers could never be quite sure what to expect under the paintwork. Thanks to active thermography, it is now possible to see through the paint. From now on, you can tell how much foreign material is on the sheet metal by the colors shown by the thermal imaging camera.
Back at Le Mans
He has been there for Porsche his whole life. Herbert Linge knows Le Mans as a mechanic, racing driver and camera car pilot. He gives tips, reminisces and talks about the past. The eighty-year-old enjoys Le Mans once again.
The BMW that Elvis owned
After two years, the restoration work on the BMW 507 that once belonged to Elvis Perpley is coming to an end. Five years ago, Jack Castor knocked on the door of BMW Classic with two BMW 507s in his garage and a request to restore one of them. Now the finished work is being unveiled.
