The Arosa ClassicCar, the international hill climb between Langwies and Arosa, starts tomorrow, August 29, 2013. In addition to the unique gems, spectators can also look forward to some very special drivers this year.
Former Formula 1 professional in Arosa
On the occasion of the 9th Arosa ClassicCar, a former Formula 1 driver will be taking part in the international hill climb at the end of the Schanfigg valley. Jochen Mass started his career in 1986 with touring car racing, at the same time he also drove in Formula 3, Formula 2 and later also in Formula 1. His numerous successes include:
- German Touring Car Champion (1972)
- European Touring Car Champion (1972)
- Victory in the Spanish GP (1975)
- Victory in the 24 Hours of Le Mans (1989 in a Sauber Mercedes C9)
Jochen Mass still enjoys taking part in nostalgia races today and competes in the Alpine Performance class at the Arosa ClassicCar in a Mercedes-Benz 300SL GW.
Former rally pro as race cab driver
The new main sponsor elipsLife is providing the Arosa ClassicCar with a double highlight: German presenters Matthias Malmedie and Niki Schelle, who host the RTL2 show "GRIP - das Motormagazin", are visiting the event. Reto Toscan, CEO of elipsLife, explains how this came about: "We want to establish the Arosa ClassicCar as an international racing event for classic cars. To this end, the connection between classic car enthusiasts and "race freaks" must be made. The car show GRIP is equally dedicated to classic cars and fast vehicles of all kinds. That's why elipsLife decided to bring Matthias Malmedie to Arosa, and he immediately agreed."
Both presenters have motorsport experience themselves, for example Schelle came third in the 2006 Deutschland Rallye and Malmedie drove in the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring, among others. As Matthias Malmedie had to cancel his appearance as a race taxi driver at the Arosa ClassicCar at short notice due to an injury, his presenting partner spontaneously stepped into the breach. Niki Schelle will give the co-drivers an unforgettable ride on the race track in an Audi R8 race cab on Sunday. Matthias Malmedie will be at the Arosa ClassicCar despite his injury.
Motorsport legend at the start
The organizing committee is particularly pleased to welcome Gody Naef back to the Arosa ClassicCar. The motorsport legend started his career in 1950 with a Fiat Topolino and just one year later he was at the start of the Albis mountain race for the first time.
Gody Naef drove his greatest successes with Abarth, his favorite car being the Abarth Spyder 1000, with which he took part in countless events and won a large number of category and daily victories. At 94, Naef is the oldest participant in the Arosa ClassicCar, but is in no way inferior to the younger drivers. In the Alpine Performance category, he will be confidently steering his Alfa Romeo Zagato RZ up the bends - the organizers wish him lots of fun on the race track from Langwies to Arosa.
