Heinz W. Jordan and Dr. Dietrich Krahn revive the airfield race in Kassel-Calden. It has now been 30 years since the last race was held at the old airport, and this year the opportunity arose to return there.
The airfield race in Calden began with the International ADAC Hessenpreis in August 1971 with races for the German Circuit Championship. The races were held on the runway of Kassel Calden Airport, which had opened a year earlier. Among the drivers who started at the airfield were personalities such as Jochen Mass, Klaus Ludwig, Hans-Joachim "Strietzel" Stuck, Hans Heyer, Hellmut Kelleners and Willi Kauhsen as well as international greats such as Nelson Piquet, Vittorio Brambilla, Henri Pescarolo, Bob Wollek, Toine Hezemans, Tim Schenken, Herbert Müller
and Karl Wendlinger.
Until 1987, the Calden airfield circuit was a regular venue for various races. 1987 then saw the end of circuit racing in northern Hesse, as an instrument landing system was installed in Calden. The last official motorsport event on the site took place in 1997 at an ADAC Nordhessen Rallye.
From August 25 to 27, 2017, cars and motorcycles will once again compete on the 2.6 km circuit as part of the historic Kassel-Calden airfield race, with the old runway once again being integrated into the course. Airport races have a long tradition in Europe and it is certainly unusual for a former race to be brought back to life.
