A whole field of Lister racing cars will be competing in the new Scott Brown Trophy at the Goodwood Motor Circuit. Probably Lister's best-known model, the Knobbly, will be celebrating its 60th anniversary next year. But versions with engines from Jaguar and Chevrolet will also be competing.
The name Scott Brown, of course, goes hand in hand with Lister. Although Scott Brown struggled with severe reformation to his hand, leg and foot due to his mother contracting measles during pregnancy, he was one of the most talented racing drivers of his time. He had great success behind the wheel of a Lister-Jaguar Knobbly.
The Knobbly was driven for the first time by Scott Brown in 1957, but a fault with the clutch prevented early success. It was not until a week later that Archie was able to take the lead in the British Empire Trophy in his Lister and Archie's victory in the Sussex Trophy was also celebrated at the Goodwood Easter Meeting.
When he received his international racing license in 1958 after a long period of back and forth, he lost control of his car during a duel at Spa-Francochamps and suffered fatal injuries.
Even after the tragic loss of Archie Scott Brown, Lister was able to achieve good results with their racing cars. This was followed the following year by a setback with the new Lister Costin, which initially still had some weaknesses...
The race in honor of Scott Brown is one of many that will provide a spectacle at the 2017 Goodwood Members' Meeting.
