From 26 October to 30 October 2020, Gooding & Co is organizing an online-only auction for the second time in the Corona year 2020. In addition to 17 automobile lots, 49 cars will go under the virtual hammer. The total value of the cars was estimated at over USD 13.5 million. Nine cars (18 percent) will be offered without a reserve price.
20 brands
Twenty car manufacturers are represented at Gooding at the end of October 2020: Porsche with 10, Ferrari with eight, Rolls-Royce with five and Mercedes-Benz with four cars. Less well-known brands include Continental and Muntz. On average, the cars are almost 49 years old.
The pre-war faction is represented by three cars in the lower price range, a 1934 Ford V8 Station Wagon (USD 90,000 to 120,000), a 1937 Rolls-Royce 25/30 Saloon (USD 25,000 to 45,000) and a 1937 Ford DeLuxe Cabriolet (USD 45,000 to 65,000).
At the other end of the age spectrum, there are five cars at the new millennium, including a 2008 Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione (USD 275,000 to 325,000).
The first Maserati A6G/54-Frua Spider
According to Frua specialist Stefan Dierkes, ten Maserati A6G/54s were fitted with the spider body designed by Pietro Frua. The first, chassis 2180, was built from May to August 1956 and delivered to Paris.
The Spider soon made its way to the States, where it has since been owned by several brand enthusiasts. Now the beautiful Maserati is set to find a new owner for between £2 million and £2.75 million.
Two special Mercedes-Benz cars
Two valuable Mercedes classics with the famous three-liter six-cylinder engine of the fifties will come onto the market at Geared Online at the end of October.
The 300 SL Gullwing from 1957 with chassis number 198.040.7500027 belonged to the same owner for around two dozen years. During this time, it was completely restored and subsequently won the Le Cercle Concours in California. It is now expected to fetch USD 1 to 1.3 million.
A Mercedes-Benz 300 Sc Cabriolet from 1956 with chassis number 188.013.5500007 is expected to be only slightly cheaper. The brown convertible is one of only 49 examples built by the factory and has been extensively restored. The estimate is USD 750,000 to 950,000.
Three 914s
Gooding is looking for new owners for three (VW) Porsche 914s. Two of the three cars are six-cylinder versions from 1971 and 1972.
One is equipped with the coveted M471 option, meaning it has wide fenders and the appearance of the GT. At USD 125,000 to 175,000, however, this also comes at a correspondingly high price.
The "normal" 914/6 from 1971 is expected to find a new garage for USD 50,000 to 75,000 (no minimum bid), the 914 2.0 from 1976 was estimated at USD 45,000 to 65,000.
The blue Countach
The early versions of the Lamborghini Countach LP 400 are particularly popular. The 1975 model on offer is one of 158 examples equipped with the famous air intakes ("Periscopica") and also painted in the color "Blu Metallizzato", one of the most beautiful colors for the Countach.
At USD 900,000 to 1.1 million, the estimated value of chassis 1120064 is at Miura level.
Mainly super classics
Whether Dino 246 GT, Lancia Stratos HF, Ferrari 250 GT Lusso or Jaguar E-Type, at least half of Geared Online's offerings belong in the super classic category. In between, however, there are also some very special exotics, such as an Alpine A110 1600 S Group 4 from 1970 (USD 180,000 to 240,000) or a BMW M3 from 1995 (USD 25,000 to 35,000).
You don't come across a BMW 1600-2 Cabriolet at every auction either, nor a Mercedes-Benz 230 CE (W123) from 1984 for USD 35,000 to 45,000 (no reserve price).
... and a restoration object
An Alfa Romeo 1900 C Pinin Farina Cabriolet with chassis number AR1900C*01063 is expected to go for USD 250,000 to 350,000. It has apparently spent the last thirty years in a (presumably not entirely dry) garage in New Hampshire.
Accordingly, this is a restoration object that will require a great deal of dexterity to bring it back to its former glory.
... and two Beetles
The first car lot is a VW Beetle from 1955. Chassis 10822325 is one of the popular Ovali Beetles with a folding roof and was restored to the highest standards over a period of five years. The estimated value is correspondingly high at USD 45,000 to 65,000.
If you are looking for a cheaper Beetle, you can also buy the champagne edition of the VW 1303 Cabriolet from 1978.
More information about the individual cars and many pictures can be found on the Gooding & Co website, where the cars can also be purchased at auction from October 26, 2020. The cars can also be inspected, but you have to make an appointment in advance and travel to Santa Monica in California.
