Like RM/Sotheby's and Bonhams, Gooding & Co normally holds a traditional face-to-face auction at the Scottsdale Concours in the USA. However, while the two competitors will continue to do so in January 2022, Gooding decided to hold the auction in "shared online" mode.
57 cars will now go under the hammer virtually between January 24 and 28, 2022. However, Gooding did not want to leave it entirely without an on-site presence, so registered bidders can go and view the cars on site in Scottsdale.
Ford ahead of Porsche
The fact that this auction is different from other Gooding auctions can be seen from the fact that there is not a single Ferrari on offer, unless you count the Dino as a Ferrari. Instead, there are nine Fords and seven Porsches for sale.
In total, the cars are estimated at USD 8.6 million, so an average of around USD 150,000 per car is expected. The average age of the vehicles is 58 years, and almost a third will be auctioned without a reserve price.
One of three Touring Maserati 5000 GTs
The first versions of the Maserati 5000 GT were fitted with touring bodies, but later Allemano was more popular. Gooding is now putting the third of these touring coupés under the hammer.
Chassis AM103.010 was on display at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1960 and is now being offered with an incomplete restoration for USD 700,000 to 900,000.
The Speedster from the barn
The Porsche 356 A Speedster from 1957 with chassis number 82893 comes from many years of ownership. The idea when it was purchased in the 1970s was probably to restore it, but the work was never completed, so the Speedster is now looking for a new owner as a garage or barn find.
However, he will have to part with between USD 275,000 and 325,000, which is certainly a considerable sum given the condition of the car. In return, however, he can opt for a concours restoration or an outlaw body, depending on his taste.
Some super classics
Despite the absence of Ferrari cars, there are many super classics up for auction at Gooding.
Prominently represented are three Jaguar E-Types from the first series with vintages from 1961 to 1967 and estimated values of between USD 180,000 and 260,000, as well as an XK 120 SE Roadster.
Lancia is at the start with a Flaminia Sport 3C Zagato from 1962 (USD 275,000 to 350,000).
In addition to the 5000 GT, Maserati will also be present with an elegant 1970 Ghibli 4.9 SS (USD 250,000 to 300,000) and a red Sebring Series 1 (USD 175,000 to 325,000).
A Dino 246 GTS from 1974 (USD 375,000 to 425,000) will save the honor of Ferrari, so to speak, while more unusual types from the Porsche camp such as two 914s and a 996 Turbo S Cabriolet from 2005 will be on display in Scottsdale.
Two Volkswagen Type 2 Microbuses, one of which has 23 windows, are for sale, as are two Alfa classics from the fifties and sixties, namely a 1900 C Sprint from 1952 (USD 275,000 to 350,000) and a 2600 Touring Spider from 1965 (USD 125,000 to 150,000).
Rarities
The Citorën DS21 Concorde from 1966 as a coupé by Chapron belongs more in the rarities corner.
USD 125,000 to 150,000 are required.
The 1954 Kaiser Darrin is also certainly one of the rarest cars at the auction, and is expected to fetch between USD 100,000 and 130,000.
A 1913 White Model 30 G.A.D. Roadster is the oldest car in the auction and is expected to sell for USD 150,000 to 170,000.
More pictures and lots of information on the individual vehicles can of course be found on the Gooding & Co. website.
