In addition to RM and Bonhams, Gooding & Company will also be holding an auction in Scottsdale in January, as it does every year. On January 16 and 17, 2015, 126 vehicles will go under the hammer at Scottsdale Fashion Square.
The vehicles on offer are worth around USD 70 million (EUR 57.5 million, CHF 68.8 million); on average, a car is expected to change hands for USD 557,282 (EUR 456,971, CHF 546,136). Expectations for new price records are high.
Porsche, Ferrari, Mercedes and Jaguar
Almost half of the range is dominated by four brands. Porsche is most strongly represented with 20 vehicles, followed by Ferrari with 18 cars, Mercedes Benz with 14 offers and Jaguar with 9 lots.
10 cars represent the pre-war era, 27 the period after the Second World War up to 1959. 52 lots in total represent the largest proportion of vehicles from the 1960s. But the 25 seventies cars also show that this period is increasing in value. The remaining 12 cars date from the 1980s to the modern era, and the green Porsche 997 GT3 from 2011 on offer is almost a new car.
The most expensive
The ten most valuable vehicles, all of which are worth millions, include five Ferraris, three Mercedes-Benzes (all 300 SL), a Porsche (Carrera 6) and a BMW (507).
20 cars, i.e. around one sixth, are announced with prices over one million USD. It is interesting to note that, with the exception of the Ferrari 250 LWB California Spider from 1959, Gooding has no vehicles in the double-digit million range to offer.
Hardly any racing cars
The majority of the cars on offer are "normal" road vehicles, but there are also a few racing cars and racing sports cars, including the 1966 Porsche Carrera 6 (906) in orange livery, which was estimated at USD 2 to 2.4 million. Remember, around four or five years ago these cars were still being traded for less than half a million USD.
The two Chevrolet Yenko Super Camaro from 1967 and 1968 are certainly also attractive, although they will also fetch around half a million USD.
Classic of the century
The main part of the Gooding offer consists of cars that are currently in vogue at auctions. These include two Aston Martin DB4s as well as a phalanx of Ferrari sports cars, starting with three variants of the 250 GT, two 275 GTB/GTS, Coupé and Cabriolet of the 330 through to a 365 GT/4 BB and a Daytona, as well as of course the certainly highly sought-after 400 Superamerica Seris 1 Coupé from 1962.
Not to be forgotten are four examples of the increasingly valuable Dino 206/246 GT/GTS, the most expensive of which, a Dino 246 GT from 1970 in white paintwork, was estimated at USD 550,000 to 750,000 (Euro 467,500 to 6347,500, CHF 539,000 to 715,000).
Three Jaguar E-Types with equally high price expectations and four XK variants form the spearhead of Jaguar, while Lamborghini is represented with five vehicles that characterize the entire model range, so to speak, from the 400 GT to the Miura, Jarama, Countach and LM002.
The Mercedes-Benz brand appears in the catalog with the usual SL spectrum, starting with four 300 SLs, one of which is a Gullwing, all of which are priced between USD 1.5 and 2.25 million, three 190 SLs and three 280 SLs.
At Porsche, various 911s naturally make up the main range, but there are also five 356s and a 959 for sale, all with a record-high estimate of USD 1.5 to 2 million.
Exotic
A special car is certainly the Alfa Romeo Giulietta SZ from 1960, which will go under the hammer unrestored for USD 600,000 to 800,000.
From a European perspective, the two Chevrolet Yenko Super Camaro from 1967 and 1968, which are expected to be traded in the region of half a million USD, are also likely to be among the little-known vehicles.
The Toyota 2000 GT can also be counted among the exotic cars, which in turn can hope for a price of over one million USD.
And the fact that a 1955 DKW Auto Union Schnellaster Tieflader 3=6 has turned up in America, which is also priced in the high USD 90,000 to 120,000 range, is probably also one of the more unusual features of the Scottsdale week.
Inexpensive
The spectrum at Gooding is wide. The cheapest car, a 1973 MG B, was estimated at just 1/320 of the value of the most expensive. However, there is a whole range of interesting vehicles for sale at the lower end of the price spectrum, such as a 1964 Pontiac Tempest Station Wagon , a 1938 American Bantam Roadster, a 1963 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia , a 1974 Lotus Europa Twin Cam Special or a 1967 Volvo P 1800S, albeit no longer quite as cheap, which was estimated at USD 50,000 to 70,000.
After all, a quarter of all the vehicles on offer have estimated values below the hundred-thousand-dollar mark, and since around 60% of the offers are called without a minimum price, there may be a chance of finding a bargain here and there.
The unusual
The BMW M3 E30, especially in convertible form, has hardly ever appeared at an auction in the USA before. At USD 80,000 to 100,000, Gooding is probably trying to herald a new trend for this 1989 model.
If this BMW is too expensive for you, you might want to try a 1956 Isetta 300 convertible.
