Gooding & Co is the official auction house of the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elégance. But for once, David Gooding is in danger of being overshadowed by RM/Sotheby's, as even more expensive cars than Gooding's are on offer at the competitor's auction, which takes place on the same two days.
However, Gooding & Co will also be offering a highly interesting range of extremely rare and special classics on August 24/25, 2018, as a glance at the auction catalog shows.
A total of 148 vehicles from eleven decades, including two motorcycles, with a total value of around USD 168 million will be offered. This amounts to around USD 1.1 million per vehicle, even if you include the BMW 633 CSi from 1978, which is the last car to go under the hammer and has been estimated at USD 40,000 to 60,000.
At the best age
On average, the cars on offer are 49 years old, the extremes being 1908 (American Underslung 50 HP Roadster from 1908, estimated at USD 1.2 to 1.4 million) and 2017 (Ferrari GTC4 Lusso, USD 500,000 to 700,000).
42 of the 148 vehicles are not yet classic cars, i.e. less than 30 years old. As many as 26 lots were built before (or during) the Second World War. With 33 vehicles from the 1960s, this age group is the most strongly represented, which is no surprise.
Porsche ahead of Ferrari
At Gooding, Porsche is ahead in terms of the number of cars represented. There are 30 sports cars from Zuffenhausen compared to 25 Ferraris from Maranello.
Only Mercedes-Benz has a double-digit number, the rest is shared by smaller delegations and of course many brands that are only represented once, such as Auburn, Chrysler, De Tomaso, Iso, Minerva, RUF, Siata and Toyota.
Barn finds and rediscovered classics
Gooding can offer several barn finds and rediscovered classics. One of these is the first Bentley R-Type Continental Fastback produced in 1952 with chassis number BC1A. At USD 1.5 to 2 million, the special history is certainly taken into account.
Although the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL from 1956, which was delivered to the USA, was originally white, the second owner had it painted red. Since then, hardly any changes have been made to the gullwing, so Gooding speaks of a "lovely patina". The car is expected to cost USD 1.1 to 1.3 million and will be sold without a reserve price.
It will be interesting to see how the bidders value the Ferrari 250 GT Lusso from 1964. The silver beauty has been stored since 1978 and has 30,000 miles on the clock.
Gooding expects USD 1.4 to 1.8 million for the coupé, only slightly less than you would currently have to pay for a Concours Lusso.
The Ferrari of the Admiral
The Ferrari 500 Mondial is one of the most beautiful racing cars of all time and chassis 0556 is certainly one of the most interesting examples of all. It was originally bought by a French privateer, who immediately took part in the 24 Hours of Paris/Montlhéry with it. The blue-painted Barchetta then went on to win its class at the Venezuelan Grand Prix. Finally, the car ended up in the USA, where it waited in a corner of a Rambler garage for its revival.
In 1960, a naval officer named Robert Philips found the car and restored it himself. And raced it again. Many years later, now an admiral, he had the Mondial completely restored and showed it at Pebble Beach in 2008, where he won the class. Now USD 5.5 to 7.5 million is expected for the four-cylinder racing car.
A Ferrari 275 GTB/C from 1966 is set to be considerably more expensive. As one of 12 racing cars built, it has a thin aluminum body. Chassis 09063 was once part of the collection of Albert Obrist, who famously had to sell it to Bernie Ecclestone. He in turn sold the 275 GTB/C on. With participations in the 24 Hours of Daytona in 1967, 1969 and 1970, there is of course also a racing history to the car, which is now expected to cost the considerable sum of USD 12 to 14 million.
Two other racing coupés from Maranello are somewhat cheaper, namely a Ferrari 250 GT TdF from 1959 (chassis 0905 GT) and a Ferrari 166 MM/195 S from 1950 (chassis 0060 M). Both cost between USD 6.5 and 7.5 million.
The predecessor of the Dino 206 GT
The Dino 206/246 GT is not only one of the most beautiful sports cars produced in Maranello, but also one of the most attractive to drive, even if it did not have the Ferrari horse on the radiator grille. The Dino Berlinetta Speciale shown in Paris in 1965 had already given a foretaste of the future Dino.
The prototype that Pininfarina showed in Turin in 1966 was already much closer in form to the future Dino 206. The elegant coupé was painted yellow and still had the six-cylinder engine mounted longitudinally, something that Ferrari had changed for the production version. Chassis 00106 was illustrated in many books and is certainly one of the milestones in Ferrari model development. For this, USD 2 to 3 million still seems comparatively cheap.
One of four Ferrari 330 GTCs from 1967 is set to be somewhat more expensive. Chassis 09653 was given its own bodywork by Pininfarina as one of four examples with this look. The car has hardly been seen at public events since 1992 and would certainly be a welcome participant in many major beauty contests. The entry price: USD 3.3 to 3.8 million.
Two very special early Maserati
But you can invest a lot of money not only in Ferrari but also in Maserati. There is the early Zagato Coupé A6G/54 from 1956. Chassis 2155 is estimated at USD 4.3 to 4.6 million and can even boast a Mille Miglia participation (1956). However, the car was redesigned in 1958 in the direction of the later 3500 GT model.
Certainly one of Pietro Frua's most beautiful creations is the 1955 Maserati A6GCS/53 Spider, which won the Coppa d'Oro and the class prize at the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este in 2010.
He is now being offered for USD 5.5 to 6.5 million.
The heartthrob of Hollywood stars
Only two Duesenberg SSJs were built on a shortened chassis, both of which went to Hollywood stars of the 1930s. J-563 went to Gary Cooper, J-567 to Clark Gable. Cooper became a world star for his role in "High Noon", among other things. For the 1930s, the Duesenberg was an impressively fast car with a top speed of over 200 km/h.
Now Cooper's Duesy is looking for a new buyer for a price in excess of USD 10 million.
One of 12 Ford GT40 MK IVs
When the original five-liter GT40s could no longer keep up with the ever faster prototypes, Ford went one better. With a displacement of seven liters and four gears, the Le Mans victory was repeated in 1967. Chassis J-10s were built to similar specifications and were mainly used in racing in 1969 and 1970. Jack Brabham, Vic Elford, George Follmer, David Hobbs and Peter Revson were among those at the wheel.
The car is now for sale in Le Mans livery and is expected to fetch between USD 2.5 and 3 million.
The only Porsche from Bertone
Alongside a huge selection of 911 derivatives, one Porsche in particular stands out at Goodwood, the 911 Spyder from 1966. It is a one-off, built by Bertone and presented at the 1966 Geneva Motor Show. The car is on the market for the first time in 25 years and is certainly an interesting car, even if Porsche preferred to present the Targa in series production at the time and probably saw too few brand genes in the Bertone Porsche.
At USD 700,000 to 1 million, the one-off appears surprisingly affordable, especially as such high prices have already been paid for normal 911s simply because they had a famous previous owner.
Gooding in Pebble Beach is unlikely to offer many bargains, even though 41 percent of the vehicles are offered without a minimum price. We will then see whether the price level can be achieved as hoped on August 24/25, 2018.
Further information and pictures of the individual cars can also be found on the Gooding & Co. website.
