A year ago, Gooding offered 138 cars over two days in Scottsdale. They were mainly sold to local bidders who were impatiently waiting for a real hammer to fall. Everything is different in 2021, the pandemic demands adjustments. Gooding is using the already well-established "Geared Online" approach and offering significantly fewer classic cars, namely 36, online over a period of five days. Anyone who thinks that this will also make the cars cheaper is mistaken, as the average value of USD 362,000 is practically the same as a year ago, when it was calculated at USD 360,000. The cars are even slightly older, i.e. 52 instead of 48 years old.
Despite the reduced scope, the offer is broad and contains various vehicles that are certainly interesting.
The most expensive?
A Ferrari 275 GTB from 1966 with a long nose is offered as lot 38 for USD 2 to 2.4 million.
However, this does not make it the most expensive car, as the almost new Koenigsegg Regera from 2020 is valued higher at USD 2.75 to 3.5 million. Will the neo-classic also beat the super classic in the bidding?
The coolest?
For buggy fans, there should be no question, for others you can at least leave the question mark. But the Meyers Manx from 1968 is certainly an interesting specimen. The plastic body is a very early buggy, a so-called "pre-tag" example. As the title reads 1959, it can be assumed that the shortened chassis dates from that year. In addition to comprehensive documentation, the color "32S Dark Green" and the interior also appear to be largely original.
You will rarely find a more authentic buggy, at least if you believe Gooding's description. The USD 40,000 to 60,000 price tag certainly seems confident, even if it says "no reserve" next to it, which incidentally also applies to other offers.
However, the Meyers Manx still has to fight it out with a 1966 Austin Mini Moke in the "Cool" hit parade, which should certainly also receive many bonus points.
The most elegant?
Certainly one of the most beautiful cars is the 1954 Aston Martin DB2/4 as a Bertone convertible, which was valued at USD 1 to 1.4 million. It is one of only two such special bodies. Chassis LML/506 is left-hand drive and certainly a welcome participant in beauty contests.
Of course, it is not without competition at the Gooding auction, such as a Jaguar XK120 from 1950 or the Ferrari 330 GTC from 1967.
And the Packard 452D Five-Passenger Convertible Coupe from 1935 also has elegant lines.
The sportiest?
It may not be the fastest, but the 1926 Bugatti Type 37 with chassis number 37227 is certainly one of the cars from the Gooding selection that feels the sportiest to drive. After all, you are practically sitting "outside" and in a position that Grand Prix drivers once had. The Type 37 once belonged to Count Stanislaw Czaykowski and was used in many races during this period.
Despite this, significant parts of the car are said to be original, and the car certainly does not lack patina. However, USD 650,000 to 850,000 is almost Type 35 price level and there would be another four cylinders on top of that.
Of course, a Porsche 356 A Speedster from 1957 is also sporty, and it is said to cost less than half the price of the Bugatti (USD 275,000 to 350,000) and also considerably less than was paid for original Speedsters just a few years ago.
The fastest?
Over 200 MPH, or 206.446 miles per hour to be precise, was achieved by a Citroën SM specially prepared for record-breaking in 1985. However, it is unlikely to be able to hold a candle to the aforementioned Koenigsegg, but in terms of style, especially with the right towing vehicle and trailer, the Citroën is certainly superior to the Swede. And the three vehicles (2 x SM and trailer) are also significantly cheaper at USD 100,000 to 200,000 (without minimum price).
More information and pictures of the 36 vehicles and the automobilia also on offer can be found on the Gooding website.
