No, this will not be a normal auction as we are used to in 2024. At Gooding & Co on August 30, 2024 in London, the hypercars and modern classics on offer everywhere else will be missing, apart from a BMW Z8 - already 23 years old after all - and a special Ferrari 612.
The next oldest car, a Ferrari Mondial 3.2 QV, was built in 1987. And apart from the only motorcycle, a Benelli Sei from 1976, all other vehicles are at least 50 years old.
The average age is almost 72 years. However, anyone expecting cheap pre-war cars is just as wrong. On average, each of the 23 vehicles, including the motorcycle, cost £ 647,391, with the total value of the 23 lots amounting to an impressive £ 14.89 million.
Five special Bugatti
The five Bugatti cars, most of which come from the collection of Jack Braam Ruben, will take center stage at the auction near London.
The Bugatti Type 57 Atalante from 1935 was estimated at £ 3 to 4 million, the Type 43A Roadster "Sport Luxe" from 1934 is expected to be just as expensive.
The cheapest Bugatti is a Type 40 Grand Sport from 1928, but here too £400,000 to £500,000 is due.
There is also a Type 57 Stelvio from 1934 (£900,000 to 1.1 million) and a Type 57 Ventoux from 1938 (£550,000 to 650,000)
Three very different Alfa Romeos
One pre-war and two post-war Alfa Romeos from Milan will go under the hammer. The 6CD 2300B "Corto" from 1939, which was bodied as a convertible near Worblaufen, is likely to generate a lot of interest, with an estimate of £ 450,000 to £ 550,000.
Because of its special shape, the 6C 2500 Sprot Freccia d'Oro from 1949 was often called the "Walfsich". It is estimated at £ 250,000 to £ 350,000.
A Giulietta Spider from 1961 is expected to be less expensive; like two other vehicles, it is offered without reserve and for £ 80,000 to £ 120,000.
Two attractive Lancia
The two Lancia cars belong entirely to the pre-war era.
While the Lambda on offer is from the eighth series and from 1928 and is expected to cost £ 550,000 to £ 650,000, the Astura Series III as a convertible "Tipo Bocca" by Pinin Farina is expected to fetch £ 800,000 to £ 1 million.
The elegant Pegaso
The Pegaso Z-102 is rare not only as a type, but also as a brand.
A Series II Berlinetta with the beautiful Touring body is for sale. In view of the effort put into it at the time and its rarity, £ 600,000 to £ 800,000 seems almost reasonable.
Other super classics
The rest of the "field" is divided into two Alfa Romeos (DB2 and DB5 Convertible), a Ballot 2LTS from 1925, a Bentley R-Type Continental Fastback H.J. Mulliner from 1954, a Jaguar Mk 1 from 1959, a Lagonda M45 4 1/2 Litre Saloon from 1934 and a sporty Sunbeam 3 Litre Super Sports from 1926.
In addition to the young classics already mentioned, a dark blue Ferrari 365 GT4 BB from 1974 will also go under the hammer (£ 300,000 to 350,000).
It's easy to warm to any of the vehicles Gooding has brought together, and there should be no shortage of small change on August 30, 2024, when (presumably) Charlie Ross swings the hammer. After all, the value of the pound is low, especially for continental Europeans and the Swiss. And, as we all know, the stock market cannot be trusted at the moment.
It would not be surprising if new records were set this year despite the difficult times.
Further information and many pictures of the vehicles can be found on the Gooding & Co. website.
