In the past, during an exciting mountain time trial, the “fastest” time from Oberdornach to Gempen was determined using a complex correction formula, given the wide range of engine power among the participating vehicles. Against the impressive backdrop of crowds numbering in some cases over 10,000 spectators, a few genuine hill climbs took place in the 1920s.
After what was initially the last event in 1947, the Classic Group of the ACS of Both Basel revived the legend of the “mountain time trial” in 2011 to mark the 100th anniversary of the first competition.
On September 12, 2026, the 5th edition of the Gempen Memorial will take place. A field of 120 classic cars from the years 1911–1986 will bring the racing atmosphere back to life just as it was 100 years ago. The race will be held on a winding 5,210-meter course according to consistency regulations, with the average speed not exceeding 49.9 km/h.
