Rainer Braun is one of the great motorsport journalists. He recently celebrated his 76th birthday, but is far from inactive in retirement. You can always read the "Headlines from 30 years ago" in Automobilsport magazine and you can also find some stories from Braun's sewing box on Zwischengas.
His articles are so much fun because he was in the thick of it and not just there, and because he knows how to describe things in an entertaining yet realistic way. It's worth taking a look at the headlines from 30 years ago or our themed channel, which offer something for everyone. Thirty years ago, a lot had already changed compared to the sixties and professionalization had progressed further. From today's perspective, some things still seem strange, improvised or downright fantastic - not to mention the lax safety standards and the often still present "authoritarian autocrats" among the drivers and officials.
Bilstein has been supporting the "Headlines 30 years ago" article series as a partner for 13 years and Rainer Braun has already revealed two short stories to them...
DTM/Formula 3 - Schneider drives on two tracks
Ford junior Bernd Schneider has planned a tight season program for 1987. In addition to the ten DTM starts as a works driver in the Sierra XR4 Turbo, the Saarlander will also drive the complete Formula 3-DM for Team Schübel in the Dallara-VW. Because DTM and Formula 3 are a fixed event package, Schneider has a double start at the same venue with the usual changeover problems between touring car and formula car.
Formula 1 - Arnoux loses his driver's license
Because he was caught in a speed camera on a French highway at over 240 km/h, Legier driver René Arnoux has to give up his driver's license for three months and pay a fine of almost 1000 francs. As the Frenchman has two other residences in England and Italy in addition to his home country, he can also race with a license from these countries until the ban expires. The mishap will therefore have no impact on racing.
