Traditionally, Switzerland is represented by the "Automobile Flückiger Classic" team together with Emil Frey Classics. The team boss is Bruno Flückiger, the former Formula 1 (ATS) and Group C technician (Brun Porsche and Sauber Mercedes). Three historic vehicles will take part in this year's Ennstal-Classic under his wing.
The "Ennstal Classic" stands for pure motoring on the most beautiful Alpine roads in Austria. The participants of the three-day event will complete a total of over 850 km (Thursday the "Prologue", Friday the "Marathon" and on Saturday the grand finale in Gröbming). The Ennstal Classic is one of the most important historic motor sport events in Europe. Every year, over 100,000 spectators line the routes. The Porsche Design Grand Prix in Gröbming, which also takes place on Saturday, is watched by over 20,000 spectators and features historic gems from the history of motor racing. The field of participants is peppered with many prominent personalities from motor racing, politics and culture. A total of 234 teams and 19 nations will take to the starting ramps on Thursday to start the three-day event.
Jochen Mass, also a former GP F1 driver, will drive the 6.2 liter, 340 hp Chrysler 300. Co-driver is Martin Utberg, who will also produce a TV report for TopSpeed. Mass, who trained as a sailor, began his motorsport career in the late 1960s. He won the German Racing Championship in 1971. He then achieved many successes with Ford. In 1973, he was runner-up in the European Formula 2 championship in a Surtees and made his debut in F1 with this brand at the end of 1974. In 1977, Mass was a regular member of the McLaren team. He achieved his only F1 victory in 1975 under adverse safety precautions at the Spanish GP. After less successful spells with ATS, Arrows and RAM, he ended his F1 career in 1982 (105 GPs with 71 points). In the 1980s, Mass drove Porsche and Sauber-Mercedes sports cars and won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1989, where Bruno Flückiger was the responsible vehicle engineer.
Bruno Flückiger himself completes the team during the three days not only as team boss and coordinator, but also as driver of an Auto Union 1000S Coupé. His partner Caroline Hoi (daughter of mountaineering legend Klaus Hoi) will be navigating in the passenger seat. At this year's Ennstal Classic, Mass and Flückiger will be celebrating their 30th anniversary as "24h Le Mans winners".
