Every year, drivers buy an adhesive vignette and affix it to their windshield so that they can drive on Swiss freeways without penalty. It must be on the vehicle by February 1 at the latest when driving on expressways and highways. Even on a motorcycle! The vignette also costs CHF 40 in 2023 and is valid until January 31, 2024.
Electronic highway vignette coming
The "electronic highway vignette", the so-called e-vignette, should be available in Switzerland by 2023. However, it is not yet clear exactly when. However, the Federal Council wants to clarify this issue in the first or second quarter. It can therefore be assumed that the electronic vignette can hardly be purchased online before the third quarter, possibly even later. After all, the corresponding software solution still needs to be built or configured. The e-vignette is therefore likely to come too late for the 2023 classic car season.
This e-vignette has a significant advantage, especially for classic car owners (and interchangeable number plate holders), as it is issued on the license plate (and not the individual vehicle). This means that anyone who redeems several cars on the same interchangeable license plate can manage with one e-vignette per license plate and does not have to affix vignettes to two or even five or more cars.
Adhesive vignette will continue
For the time being, those who prefer to stick on a vignette need have no fear. The physical version, which will be yellow in 2023, will continue to be used for a few more years until it only accounts for a small percentage of all vignettes.
