Dorotheum will once again be auctioning 76 vehicles live at the Classic Expo Salzburg classic car fair on Saturday, October 16, 2021. In total, the cars were estimated at around EUR 3.8 million, so almost exactly EUR 50,000 per lot is expected.
34 brands represented
Mercedes-Benz (10 cars), Porsche (9) and Volkswagen (8) account for almost 36% of the vehicles, with the remainder spread across a further 31 manufacturers, some of which are represented by just one car.
On average, the vehicles are around 50 years old.
Beetle potpourri
The VW Beetle was also very popular in Austria for decades.
Four of the popular Volkswagens come under the hammer in Salzburg, a VW 1200 from 1963 (with roll-top roof), a 1300 from 1971, a 1303 Cabriolet from 1975 and finally a 1200 50th anniversary Beetle from 1985.
Prices range between EUR 14,000 and 25,000.
The Beetles are joined by a Polo and three VW Bus variants.
The master builder
In the 1970s, there was almost no way around Kaimann if you wanted to be among the front runners in Formula Vee. Many aspiring drivers, some of whom would later make it big, sat behind the wheel of the Austrian monoposto, including Niki Lauda, Helmut Marko, Helmut Koinigg, Jo Gartner, Harald Ertl, Jochen Mass and Keke Rosberg.
Austrian champion Walter Raus also drove a Kaimann and it is now being auctioned for EUR 22,000 to 30,000.
If you're keen on racing acoustics and killer performance, you might want to take a look at the 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix as a Nascar race car. At EUr 20,000 to 30,000, it should hardly be more expensive than the VW Monoposto, but will be auctioned without a minimum bid, as will 29% of the other vehicles.
Former rivals
Once competitors in the market, they are now competing against each other in front of the bidding public in Salzburg, the former rivals.
The Mercedes-Benz 560 SEC from 1989, for example, which will compete with the BMW 850i from 1992 for the bidding favor, both are estimated at EUR 18,000 to 25,000/26,000.
The Opel GT and the Ford Capri were also once rivals.
In Salzburg, a GT 1900 A-L from 1973 (EUR 16,000 to 20,000) and a Ford Capri S from 1982 (EUR 14,000 to 20,000) are up for grabs.
If you wanted to buy a luxurious sports car in 1972, you could opt for a Mercedes-Benz 450 SL, among other things.
The Italian Alfa Romeo Montreal or the Fiat Dino 2400 offered an alternative. Who will probably win the race in Salzburg?
Unorthodox colors?
While the Ferrari 308 GTS is usually popular in red, the Audi quattro was often bought in silver metallic. But red was also a popular choice.
However, "Argento" also looks good on the Ferrari and the 308 GTS on offer from 1979 is an unrestored example with only 58,000 km on the clock and with the kind of carburetor that a true enthusiast would want. Accordingly, EUR 70,000 to 90,000 would be due for it.
The Audi quattro, on the other hand, is an early coupé from 1981, the 393rd car to be built. Extensively restored, it shows what the original quattros looked like and is now expected to cost EUR 48,000 to 62,000
Old Americans
The oldest car in the auction comes from the USA, an Oldsmobile F-29 Coupe Deluxe from 1929.
He is accompanied by a 1930 DeSoto Six Series s K and a 1962 Chevrolet Confederate Series BA Sport Roadster.
The American pre-war trio is completed by three Europeans, namely a Citroën C4F from 1929, a Steyr 30 E Standard convertible from 1932 and a Lancia Aprilia Berlina Lusso from 1938.
Lamborghini trio
Three Lamborghini fighting for the favor of the bidding public.
There is a Jaarama 400 GT from 1971, which is expected to cost EUR 90,000 to 140,000, and an Espada 400 GT from 1971 for EUR 70,000 to 90,000.
However, the Countach LP400 S from 1979 is in a different price league, with its scissor doors expected to lure EUR 300,000 to 400,000 from the wallet of a solvent bidder. This would also make it the most expensive car in the auction.
From bread-and-butter ...
As usual, Dorotheum offers a wide range of cars.
It starts with former bread-and-butter cars, including the aforementioned Volkswagens, of course, but also a Fiat 1100R from 1968 (EUR 6000 to 10,000), a Mini 1000 HL from 1982 (EUR 8000 to 12,000) or a Volvo PV 544 from 1965 (EUR 11,000 to 17,000).
The 1980 Datsun Sunny 140Y coupé also belongs in this category. Such a model has probably only rarely appeared at auctions so far.
... up to the super classics
Dorotheum can of course do things differently and has a very interesting portfolio of super classics to offer.
This ranges from a Maserati Indy 4700 from 1972 (EUR 50,000 to 70,000) to various Mercedes-Benz SL models, two Jaguar E-Types, various Porsche 911 models, a Porsche 356 1500 Super from 1954 (EUR 120,000 to 180,000) and an Alfa Romeo 1900C Super Sprint from 1956 (EUR 140,000 to 200,000).
Mention should also be made here of the two Porsche 911 Speedsters from 1989, one of which is a factory edition and the other a Strosek Mega Speedster.
Finally, the 1994 Porsche 993 Cabriolet "Albrex" is a special feature, as it has a supercharger in the engine compartment, which makes the sports car even faster and, above all, significantly rarer - a real Austrian specialty, so to speak.
Further information and many pictures of the individual vehicles can be found on the Dorotheum website.
