Dorotheum and the auction of classic vehicles have been part of the Classic Expo Salzburg tradition for years, and it will happen again on October 21, 2023. 78 lots, including 73 automobiles, three tractors, a motorcycle and an engine cutaway model worth EUR 3.95 million will go under the hammer.
A total of 15 vehicles (19%) will be sold without a minimum price.
Mercedes-Benz ahead of Jaguar, Volkswagen and Porsche
With 13 cars, Mercedes-Benz is most strongly represented, followed by Jaguar (9 cars), Volkswagen (7), Porsche (6, incl. VW-Porsche 7) and Maserati (5).
The other brands are represented by a maximum of four cars, the more exotic ones such as Abarth, Ginetta or Trabant by one car each.
Few pre-war classic cars
On average, the vehicles are just over 50 years old, but the spectrum ranges from 1933 to 2005; the youngest car is an interesting Morgan Aero8 from 2005, which was estimated at EUR 60,000 to 80,000.
Five pre-war cars represent the other end of the age scale, including a sporty Riley 9HP Brooklands Special from 1933, which is offered for EUR 70,000 to 90,000.
A Peugeot 402 from 1937 is available for EUR 24,000 to 30,000, a Volkswagen Kübel Type 82 from 1943 for EUR 45,000 to 65,000.
Two BMWs complete the pre-war group, a BMW 329 Cabriolet from 1937 and a very expensively restored BMW 327 from 1940 as a coupé, which is looking for a new owner for EUR 110,000 to 160,000.
Mainly affordable super classics
On average, each vehicle in Salzburg was valued at just over EUR 50,000, which means that the super-expensive classics are missing. Nevertheless, the range of so-called super classics is very extensive, the most valuable of which is a Maserati 3500 GTI from 1962, which is expected to fetch EUR 220,000 to 280,000.
Other Maserati such as a Mexico 4200 from 1970, a Kyalami, a Merak SS and a Quattroporte from 1986 were all valued in the five-figure range.
All three Alfa Romeos on offer belong to the super classic segment. Particularly rare is the 1600 Junior Zagato from 1972, which is expected to cost EUR 30,000 to 40,000. A Montreal from 1973 was estimated at EUR 55,000 to 70,000 and a 2600 Sprint from 1966 at EUR 40,000 to 55,000.
There is also a Ferrari (328 GTS from 1986) and a Citroën 2 CV from 1987.
Jaguar offers a whole range of XK and E-Type variants.
The range of Mercedes-Benz SLs is extremely extensive, with the 190 SL, the Pagoda and the R107 all on offer. An R129 is also on offer.
And of course there are several Porsche 911s to choose from.
Everyday cars from the past
As every year, bread-and-butter cars from past decades will not be missing in Salzburg.
Several VW Beetles are on offer, as well as a Citroën Ami 8 from 1973, a Fiat 1100 Familiare from 1955, a VW Golf Cabriolet from 1988 and a Volvo 123 GT from 1967.
Some exotics
We should definitely point out some of the more unorthodox cars in Salzburg.
There is an Abarth Zagato 750 GT from 1961, for example, which is on offer for EUR 70,000 to 90,000.
EUR 25,000 to 35,000 was set for a Ginetta G4 from 1965. This is an FIA-compatible racing car weighing around 500 kg and with 110 hp, which can boast a number of historic race participations. The car is said to have been standing for some time, so you should also plan some budget for recommissioning.
The Interclassic Cinco Z from 2001 is hardly known, which is hardly surprising as the project, which began in 1991 with the aim of series production, resulted in only one roadworthy and street-legal prototype with an Audi five-cylinder engine and a self-constructed tubular frame. The sports car in the style of the 1960s Le Mans racing cars is intended to be a lot of fun to drive and now costs EUR 60,000 to 90,000.
The early Trabant P60 from 1963 is certainly also an exotic car and is offered for EUR 8,000 to 12,000 (no reserve price).
And if you would like to enjoy the driving pleasure of a Porsche 914/6 GT but don't have that kind of money to spend, you could go for the Lot 49. This is a VW-Porsche 914 2.0 from 1973, which was converted into a six-cylinder GT with great effort and sensitivity. The estimated value of EUR 35,000 to 50,000 is likely to cover only a small part of the conversion costs and the car is even being sold without a reserve price.
Not a car, but certainly an interesting showpiece is the Jaguar six-cylinder engine from 1964, which was designed without regard to cost and now also wants to be worth about the same as a car with this engine.
Further information and many pictures of the vehicles can be seen on the Dorotheum website.
