Dorotheum's auction is practically part of the identity of the popular Classic Expo Salzburg classic car fair. For October 15, 2022, the Dorotheum team has once again brought together 66 interesting vehicles, which together represent a value of around EUR 3.6 million. On average, the vehicles, including two tractors, a fire engine and a chassis without bodywork, are 52 years old.
There are also nine pre-war cars. Interestingly, these include two of the most expensive four cars in the auction, namely a Delage D6-11S Coupé Bradone from 1934 (EUR 260,000 to 340,000) and a Mercedes-Benz Type 290 Cabriolet C from 1934 (EUR 260,000 to 340,000).
Around a quarter of the vehicles are offered without a reserve price.
Brand diversity
With 31 manufacturers represented, the Dorotheum offer shines through its diversity. The strongest brands are Porsche (12 vehicles, excluding tractors) as well as Alfa Romeo and Mercedes-Benz (8 vehicles each).
All other car manufacturers are represented with a handful of cars at most, including exotic manufacturers such as Borgward, Clément-Bayard, De Sanctis, Delage, Hotchkiss, Perl and Talbot-Lago.
Two valuable Lamborghini
Two of the four most expensive cars at the auction were Lamborghini sports cars.
A Miura is missing, as is a Diablo, but with the Countach from 1989 and the Murciélago from 2005 on offer, two of the most important 12-cylinder models from Sant'Agata are represented.
Dorotheum has given an estimate of EUR 320,000 to 420,000 for the Countach, while the Murciélago is expected to be somewhat cheaper at EUR 170,000 to 250,000.
Austrian rarities
Typical for a Dorotheum auction are the special cars from Austrian production.
Where else could you buy a Steyr-Fiat Panda 4x4? This is offered as a "Country Club" edition for EUR 8000 to 12,000.
But there are even rarer Steyrs for auction. Two small Type 50 and Type 55 from 1936 and 1939 are on offer, as well as a Steyr 220 Cabriolet from 1939 and a Type 30 8/40 HP Innenlenker from 1931, which will go under the hammer for EUR 5,000 to 70,000.
Many former bread-and-butter cars
Once again, a number of everyday cars from the past will be on sale in Salzburg.
The lot list includes, for example, a Citroën 2 CV from 1983, but also a CX 2000 Pallas from 1978.
The Ford Granada 2.8 Ghia from 1980 was one of the top models from Cologne at the time, on October 15, 2022 you can buy the car at auction for EUR 10,000 to 15,000.
There are four Volkswagen cars on offer; the Type 11 Export from 1964 (EUR 16,000 to 24,000, no reserve price) and the 1500 S from 1965 (EUR 18,000 to 26,000) are sure to attract a lot of interest.
Super classics too
Of course, Dorotheum can also offer some super classics.
One example is the Alfa Romeo GTV 6 from 1985, which is apparently still as good as new with less than 40,000 km on the clock and was estimated at a rather reasonable EUR 20,000 to 28,000.
The same manufacturer also produced a Giulia and a Giulietta Spider from 1963 and 1960, as well as a 2600 Sprint Coupé from 1966 (EUR 58,000 to 72,000) and a 1600 Junior Zagato from 1973 (EUR 38,000 to 48,000).
Ferrari is at the start with a 348 ts from 1991, estimated at EUR 70,000 to 85,000.
From Mercedes-Benz, you can buy a 280 SL from 1971 (Pagoda) for EUR 80,000 to 110,000 or the 450 SEL 6.9 power sedan from 1976 (EUR 45,000 to 55,000).
Two contemporary Mercedes-Benz tuning vehicles are aimed at a special (and performance-hungry) audience, namely a 1983 Baby-Bend 190E equipped with the engine from the 450 SLC 5.0 (EUR 20,000 to 30,000) and a 560 SEC Koenig Special from 1986 (EUR 20,000 to 30,000). The latter two will go under the hammer without a reserve price.
The variety of Porsche sports cars is particularly large, we noticed three 928s (as S, GT and GTS), a 914-6 from 1970 (EUR 65,000 to 85,000) and a 930 Turbo from 1987 (EUR 70,000 to 90,000).
But the four-cylinder transaxle fraction is also well represented and of course there is no shortage of 911 variants.
The Talbot-Lago T15 LB convertible by Guilloré from 1950 is also worth a second look, with an estimate of EUR 90,000 to 120,000.
Further information and many pictures can be found on the Dorotheum website.
