Traditional auctions with an audience and a hammer are finally possible again, even in Austria. Dorotheum seizes the opportunity and offers 74 vehicles, seven of which are motorcycles, at the Vehicle and Technology Center in Vösendorf near Vienna on July 3, 2021.
Broad spectrum
On average, the 74 vehicles are around 54 years old. Prospective buyers are expected to pay just over EUR 54,000 per vehicle. The brand statistics are led by Mercedes-Benz with 14 cars, followed by BMW (10), Alfa Romeo and Jaguar (5 each) and Volkswagen and Porsche (4 each). All other brands are represented with a maximum of one or two vehicles.
The estimated values range from EUR 3000 to 450,000, the lower end is reserved for two-wheelers, but a VW Golf GLS, for example, can be bought at auction for as little as EUR 8,000 to 12,000.
Limousine competitors from the past
The pairing of the Mercedes-Benz 250 and BMW 320, both built in 1978, is interesting. Many a new car buyer at the time may have been faced with exactly this choice. According to Dorotheum, both saloons are in unrestored original condition and have comparatively low mileage.
The white Mercedes-Benz 250 was estimated at EUR 10,000 to 15,000, the automatic E21 in cedar green is said to be worth EUR 12,000 to 18,000.
Both cars are offered without a reserve price, as is the case with almost half of the offer (46%).
And of course, these two German cars are not the only former everyday vehicles to go under the hammer in Vienna. There's also an Alfa Romeo Alfetta from 1974, a BMW 316i from 1990 and a VW Beetle 1200 L "Aubergine" from 1983.
Exotic cars for connoisseurs
It is not every day that you come across a Fiat 130 Coupé from 1976, nor is it often that you can buy a BMW 1600 GT from 1968 at auction - after all, the numbers were modest.
Also rare are the Alfa Romeo 1600 Junior Zagato (1972 model year) or the Group 4 version of the Lancia Fulvia 1.6 HF (1969 model year)
The Fiat Dino, a 2.4-liter coupé from 1972 offered for EUR 30,000 to 40,000, has already blossomed into a super classic.
Pre-war classics too
As many as nine vehicles date from the pre-war period, including highly sought-after and rare cars such as the Steyr Type II 12/40 PS from 1920, which is on the lot list for EUR 240,000 to 320,000.
This was the first production vehicle from Steyr and a design by Hans Ledwinka. Only a handful of these cars are said to still exist and the proud Steyr comes from long-term ownership.
Three early BMWs, a 309 from 1934, a 315 as a convertible saloon from 1935 and a 321 Cabriolet from 1939 are to find new owners in Vienna. The estimated prices appear moderate.
And then there is the Hanomag Type 15 K as a Rekord convertible from 1935, which is offered for EUR 26,000 to 38,000.
Noble classics
The top lot numbers are almost exclusively reserved for more expensive super classics.
Two Jaguar XK sports cars are included here, as well as a Jaguar E-Type 3.8 liter OTS from 1961, which was estimated at EUR 180,000 to 240,000.
The Dorotheum experts have set an estimate of EUR 300,000 to 400,000 for the 1974 Lancia Stratos HF Stradale.
A Dino 246 GT from 1971 in unrestored condition is listed for EUR 350,000 to 450,000. And this car is special, as it has only one owner to date and many documents from its long life. The fact that registration errors from back then are also neatly documented makes the car and its history even more special.
And then there is the Alfa Romeo GTA 1300 Junior from 1969 with quite a rich racing history, which would like to find its way into a new box for EUR 110,000 to 140,000.
Don't forget to mention the 1963 Chevrolet Corvette C2 with split rear window assembled in Antwerp, which is expected to fetch EUR 110,000 to 140,000.
And that only characterizes a small part of the offer.
More information about the cars and many pictures can be found on the Dorotheum website.
