In cooperation with the Porsche Museum, Franzis Verlag presents a transparent functional model of the historic 4-cylinder boxer engine that catapulted Porsche to the Olympus of motor racing.
Munich, September 26, 2018 - In close cooperation with the Porsche Museum, Franzis Verlag is launching another kit of a legendary engine on the market after the Porsche six-cylinder boxer engine of the 911. The Type 547 racing engine, which has gone down in racing history and is also known as the 'Fuhrmann engine', is one of the best-known symbols of German automotive engineering. With its transparent, faithfully reproduced functional model on a scale of 1:3, which even has its own Porsche part number, Franzis makes the engine masterpiece tangible in the form of a kit.
Transparent functional model shows the racing engine in action
The kit, which consists of 300 individual parts, was designed by English developer John Anson using original drawings from the Porsche archives, enabling him to realize it in true-to-life detail. The individual parts made of sturdy plastic can be simply plugged and screwed together during assembly, without any gluing.
Masterpiece of engine technology
The Type 547 was the first and therefore the original type of the racing engine series developed by Ernst Fuhrmann. The air-cooled 4-cylinder boxer engine based on the Otto combustion process was specially designed for use in racing cars. The compact and powerful components were made of aluminum, the weight of steel components was significantly reduced by drilling and hollow bores. The four overhead camshafts were driven via four king shafts, which also earned the unit the royal designation 'king shaft engine'. The high-performance unit was only installed a total of 316 times in prototypes and racing cars, particularly frequently in the Spyder 550.
The history of Porsche and detailed technical knowledge
The manual in German and English clearly guides the model builder through the assembly of the racing engine. It also provides comprehensive knowledge about the Porsche company as well as exciting background information about the beginnings of racing at the sports car manufacturer from Zuffenhausen. The 112-page book with numerous historical photos, drawings and posters from the Porsche archive takes the reader on a journey through Porsche history.
