Unfortunately, the new year is not starting with rapidly falling coronavirus figures or a calmer situation. Nevertheless, the major auction houses want to maintain their usual schedule and are planning auctions in Scottsdale or online alternatives for January. Bonhams will also be putting 36 cars under the hammer on January 21, 2021. The offer is varied and also worth a second look.
Cars worth around USD 10 million
36 cars with an average age of 54 years and a median value of almost USD 300,000 are on offer, 28% of which are being auctioned without a reserve price. The variety is huge, with everything from pre-war classics to concours beauties and a cabin scooter to a well-earned racing car.
Two super classics as figureheads
The two most expensive vehicles are a 1959 BMW 507, estimated at USD 1.9 to 2.3 million. and a 1939 Mercedes-Benz 540K Special Cabriolet A, for which no estimated value was given.
The black 507 is a Series 2 example and was originally delivered to the USA. The last owner had it for 30 years.
The 540 K was the best-of-show winner at Pebble Beach in 1973 and was restored in the early seventies and nineties. The color scheme also changed in the process.
Both cars must be formally registered according to special rules in order to be allowed to bid.
The Group 44 Triumph with racing history
The "Group 44" racing team is known worldwide, the cars were always white and had a green stripe, regardless of whether they were an E-Type or other fast racing cars. In 1969 a Triumph GT6 was driven by Mike Downs, Brian Fuerstenau and Bob Tullius and eventually won the SCCA E-Production Class.
In 2005, the car was rediscovered as a barn find and then restored, since when it has been seen at the 2009 Amelica Island Concours.
Now the car is said to cost USD 50,000 to 70,000, definitely an interesting opportunity.
Replica and reinterpretation
Who wouldn't want an Alfa Romeo 8C Monza? When a collector came across some old Alfa parts, he decided to have his own Monza built. Using the original Alfa 6C engine, a new chassis and many replica parts, he created a replica that looks close to the original and is certainly fun to drive. USD 300,000 to 400,000 is the asking price.
The cars built by Christopher Runge are not so much replicas as homages. They embody the spirit of the late fifties and look breathtaking. But they are built today, even if the "title" says 1960.
USD 225,000 to 250,000 allows you to get into the driving experience of that time and of course guarantees a fairly high level of exclusivity.
Exotic cars
Three cars deserve special mention.
The Fiat 1100/103 Turismo Veloce Charmant from 1954 with Vignale bodywork and Michelotti design is one of 12 examples, but probably the one with the lowest mileage. The original owner had quickly put it away and stored it for years because of the attention the elegant car caused. Now the restored car is said to cost USD 175,000 to 225,000, which is probably a lot of money for a Fiat, but not that much for a potential Concours winner.
And then there is the Elva Mk IV Sports Racer from 1959, one of only a few examples and with an impressive racing history. The Barchetta, which was very competitive at the time, even has a FIVA pass and feels at home both on the racetrack and on the concours turf. USD 80,000 to 120,000 does not seem too much to ask.
The Kurtis 500KK from 1954/1955 should also not be overlooked. Originally built as a Salem Special, it was not allowed to compete in the Carrera Panamericana as originally intended, but it made it into magazines and glossy brochures because the car with a Byers body looks truly breathtaking. USD 130,000 to 160,000 is the asking price.
