The Goodwood Festival of Speed will host one of the biggest Bonhams auctions of the year on July 9, 2021. 62 cars will be on offer alongside over 100 automobilia, model cars and children's cars.
The cars are on average 51 years old and cost £261,790. Seven of the vehicles are offered without a reserve price.
Aston with almost royal provenance
Aston Martin is the most represented brand with 11 vehicles, followed by Ferrari (9), Rolls-Royce (5) and Jaguar (4). There is also a whole series of brands from which only one car will go under the hammer, such as Alvis, Lamborghini, Lotus and Subaru. The latter, by the way, is Possum Bourne's Impreza WRX STi Group A rally car, which was estimated at £ 80,000 to £ 100,000.
Back to Aston Martin. While the oldest Aston is a 1 1/2 Litre Mark II from 1935 (£ 200,000 to 250,000), the youngest car is a Vanquish S from 2007.
However, the most valuable was the DB5 Convertible from 1964. Only 85 were sold in RHD configuration and chassis DB5C/1512/R went new to actor Peter Sellers, who soon sold it on to the Earl of Snowdon and his wife Prince Margaret. The car remained in this family for many years. The "blue-blooded" Aston is now valued at £ 1.3 to 1.7 million.
Sprite with works racing history
With participations in Le Mans, the French Grand Prix and the RAC Tourist Trophy, the Riley 1 1/2 Litre TT Sprite Competition Sports with chassis 22T1750 from 1936 is certainly one of the most famous Rileys ever. The car was restored between 2006 and 2019 and the original body is included. The Riley is better known by its registration AVC 19 than by its chassis number.
The racing history is quite impressive. At £200,000 to £300,000, the four-cylinder TT Sprite is not actually overpriced.
Front-engined F1 elegance
The Ferrari Dino 246 was considered a contender for victory in the Grand Prix championships of the late fifties. The car now on offer was not built until the 1970s, but many factory parts were used for it and it can even still be purchased with a replacement chassis. Behind the front axle sits an original 2.4-liter four-camshaft V6 engine, as it was used from 1958 to 1960.
Now chassis "0011" is to find a new owner for £ 900,000 to 1.3 million.
Factory Alfa with Le Mans history
Andrea de Adamich and Targa king Ninco Vaccarella took fourth place in the 1972 Alfa Romeo Tipo 33 TT3 at Le Mans in 1972. The fast AR 11572/010 racing prototype could probably have finished on the podium had it not been for technical problems and a minor accident. Incidentally, a Matra-Simca MS670 won the race with a 37-lap lead.
Together with a rich collection of spare parts, the fast Alfa is now expected to cost £ 1.8 to 2.2 million, making it the most expensive car in the auction.
Pre-war Maserati with a South American history
The racing career of the Maserati Tipo 26B 2.1 Litre Sports GP and Formulare Libre two-seater from 1928 with chassis number 35 lasted almost a decade. Juan Augusto Malcolm was at the wheel of this fast car each time and was thoroughly successful.
Now the GP Maserati is set to change hands for an estimated £ 0.9 to 1.3 million.
Ace as ace
A real feast for the eyes is the AC Ace Bristol from 1955, which is going under the hammer as a right-hand drive car with chassis number AE69. Once owned by John Gardiner, the roadster was restored almost 20 years ago and has covered just 800 miles since then.
The color "Pacific Green" is excellent and for the first time in 55 years a new owner can put it in his garage if he is willing to part with an estimated £ 250'000 to 300'000.
Small Amilcar
Also fully restored is a small Amilcar CGS from 1927 with chassis number 18737. The little French car has been at home in many countries, including Australia, and is now expected to cost a manageable £60,000 to £70,000.
And even the original engine block and cylinder head are included.
A few super classics
Of course, there are also some super classics for sale at Bonhams at the Festival of Speed, including a Maserati Ghibli or a Ferrari F40, for example, but the specialties are certainly what make this auction so special, whether they are called MG K3, Ogle SX 1000 or Lagonda Rapide Sports Saloon.
More information about the individual vehicles and many pictures can be found on the Bonhams website.
