The Scottsdale auctions traditionally kick off the new auction year. Bonhams will be selling 123 automobiles, a camping trailer and a Vespa team, as well as several pedal cars, at the Westin Kierland Resort & Spa from 10 am on January 27, 2023.
In total, the vehicles represent a value of around USD 35 million, so each lot is expected to fetch around USD 280,000.
Porsche and the others
On average, the cars are 54 years old. The list of brands is headed by Porsche with 27 cars, followed by Aston Martin (10), Jaguar (8), Chrysler, Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz and Rolls-Royce with 6 vehicles each.
There is no shortage of exotic brands, such as Allard, Griffith, Minerva and Osca.
Worth millions
A good handful of cars were valued in the seven-figure range. The Maserati MC12 Corse from 2006 is probably at the top of the list.
The racing car was based on the Ferrari Enzo, but was longer and wider and designed for racing. Because of the rules, 50 road cars also had to be built. The rarest, however, are the "Corse" versions, which were based on the racing car but without the restrictions of the FIA regulations. They were not permitted on the road, nor in racing. 13 of these trackday examples were built, including the prototype. The car on offer with chassis 003 was only driven 123 miles. However, Bonhams does not officially provide an estimated value.
The difference to the Simplex 50 HP 5 Passenger Torpedo Tourer from 1912 could hardly be greater. However, the 110-year-old pre-war car should not be underestimated, at least Bonhams expects USD 2.5 to 3.5 million for it.
The third most expensive car was a BMW 507 from 1958. The second series roadster was valued at USD 2.1 to 2.4 million.
Bonhams estimates USD 1.65 to 1.95 million for a Ferrari 275 GTS from 1965 and USD 1.5 to 1.8 million for a Siata 208S Spider from 1953 with a Motto body.
A 2005 Porsche Carrera GT, estimated at USD 1.1 to 1.4 million, closes the circle of million-dollar values.
The special cars from Chrysler
Bonhams can offer a whole group of Chrysler rarities in Scottsdale.
It starts with the 1957 Chrysler Ghia Super Dart 400 (USD 750,000 to 950,00) and continues with the 1954 Chrysler GS-1 Coupé (USD 600,000 to 800,000), the 1962 Ghia L6.4 from 1962 (USD 450'000 to 650'00) to the Chrsler 300-G Convertible from 1961 (USD 130'000 to 160'000).
British traditional classics
Of course, Bonhams also offers the popular typical British classics. From Aston Martin there is a DB Mk III from 1959, a DB4 from 1963, two DB6s from 1966/67 and several eight-cylinder sports cars.
Three Austin-Healeys are represented, as are four Jaguar E-Types and three Jaguar XK variants.
Various Rolls-Royce Cloud and Dawn models can be found in the catalog.
The exotic
In addition to many super classics, the Bonhams range also includes some rather rare exotics.
Worth mentioning is the Griffith Series 600 Coupé from 1967. Many will know the elegant coupé more as the Intermeccanica Italia or Torino, but the starting point was actually the Griffith. Given its rarity, only six such cars were built, USD 90,000 to 120,000 does not seem excessive as an estimate.
The 1953 Ford Mainline Ranch Wagon was produced in significantly higher numbers, but not too many are likely to have survived. Bonhams expects USD 35,000 to 55,000 for this pretty station wagon.
83 Allard J2Xs were built from 1951 to 1954, so a car like chassis J3065 is a rare sight. Another special feature of the vehicle on offer is that the first owner was called Masten Gregory. With a thoroughly relevant racing history, the car is expected to fetch USD 450,000 to 550,000 on January 27, 2023.
The 1955 Mistral-Chevrolet looks even more racing. The barchetta body comes from the USA and is made of plastic, with a tubular frame and a Chevrolet engine underneath. The racing car is now expected to cost USD 90,000 to 120,000.
Another rare sight is the O.S.C.A. 1600 GT from 1964 with Fissore superstructure.
The Citroën CX 2400 from 1977 with Pallas equipment must look exotic to Americans. It still has the classic magnifying glass speedometer on the dashboard and certainly looks very unorthodox. The French car, which is apparently in very good condition and can also run on gas, is looking for a new owner for USD 15,000 to 30,000.
The Bonhams offer is very varied, more information and pictures can of course be found on the Bonhams website.
