Bonhams organizes an auction of classic vehicles every year as part of the Goodwood Festival of Speed, and will do so again on 12 July 2024.
In addition to some license plates and automobilia (as well as children's cars), 73 cars with a total value of almost £ 19.5 million are on offer. 16% of the vehicles are offered without a reserve price, and on average they are just over 50 years old.
Star at the top
With ten Mercedes-Benz (plus one Benz), the Stuttgart-based company supplied the largest contingent, followed by Ferrari (9), Porsche (9) and Alfa Romeo (5). While the Ferrari are 24 years young on average, the average age of the Mercedes-Benz is 56 years, and 64 years for the Alfa Romeo.
Aston Martin and Jaguar are represented with four cars, Ford with three. Some more exotic brands round off the range, including Frazer Nash, Sunbeam and Turner.
The special Mercedes collection
Tom Scott was a Mercedes fan, as you can see immediately when you look at his collection. Nine vehicles will go under the hammer, ranging from a replica Benz Velo to a 1971 Mercedes-Benz 250 SE 3.5 Cabriolet.
However, the highlights are certainly the two 300 SL roadsters from 1962 and the Gullwing from 1955, as well as the Mercedes-Benz 36/220 S-Type Four-Seated Sports Tourer from 1928, which was estimated at £ 1.6 to 2.5 million.
Not part of the collection but also worth a mention is a virtually undriven 2008 SLR McLaren, which will go under the hammer for £200,000 to £300,000 with no reserve.
A Porsche Carrera RS to drive
The chassis 9113601428 is an original Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 Touring from 1973. The car was later converted to Lightweight specification and has an extensive history.
A car that should be driven a lot, according to the previous owner. The estimated value is £300,000 to £400,000.
A rally Metro
With no reserve price, the 1986 MG Metro 6R4 goes under the hammer on July 12, 2024.
The car has a documented racing history and the engine has been freshly overhauled. £ 150'000 to 200'000 seems quite realistic.
Hand-shifted younger Ferrari
Young Ferrari sports cars with the classic gearshift gate and clutch pedal achieve high prices at auction. Bonhams can offer three such cars at FoS, namely a right-hand drive F355 Spider from 1997 for £ 75,000 to £ 100,000, a 550 Maranello Coupé, also right-hand drive for £ 80,000 to £ 100,000 and one of the few F430 Coupés from 2006 with manual transmission, which was estimated at £ 125,000 to £ 150,000.
This car is also right-hand drive.
An open backdrop was of course a matter of course in the Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona, the right-hand drive coupé with chassis number 16043 from 1972 is offered for £ 380,000 to £ 450,000.
Not manual, but the most expensive car in the auction is the 2014 Ferrari LaFerrari, which, with just 1430 miles on the clock, is looking for a new owner for £2.8 to 3.4 million.
Rather exotic
Of course, you can also find more exotic cars at Bonhams on July 12, 2024 alongside popular super classics.
Examples include the Frazer Nash Mille Miglia Sports Roadster from 1952 (£ 400,000 to 450,000), the Lancia Flavia Sport Coupé Zagato from 1965 (£ 40,000 to 50,000), the Facel Vega HK500 from 1962 (£ 45,000 to 65,000) or the early Morgan 4/4 Sports from 1937 (£ 35,000 to 45,000).
Also worth a second look is the Alfa Romeo 2300 Spider Corto from 1932, which at £ 350,000 to £ 500,000 seems very favorably valued, considering that it even took part in the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elégance. It is important to know, however, that the car is not one of the 188 8C-2300s built between 1931 and 1933, but was built in the 1990s by Peter Shaw with an engine by Jim Stokes.
More information and many pictures of the cars can be found on the Bonhams website.
