Bonhams will auction 90 vehicles at the Westin Kierland Resort & Spa in Scottsdale on January 27, 2022. This is Bonhams' first major vehicle auction of the new year. On offer are 89 cars and a motorcycle with a total value of USD 11.15 million, which equates to approximately USD 124,000 per lot. 47 percent of the vehicles, which are on average around 52 years old, will be sold without a reserve price.
Aston Martin and Porsche are the most strongly represented with eleven cars each, Jaguar has seven, Mercedes-Benz six and Ferrari and Ford five cars each. The other end of the spectrum is represented by 22 brands, each of which is represented by only one vehicle.
Clear pre-war range
With eight cars built before 1940, the pre-war selection is manageable. American cars from Ford (4x) and Cord (1x) have the upper hand, while a Darracq 9 HP Voiturette and a Rolls-Royce 20/25 hp Tourer represent Europe. They are joined by a Riley MPH from 1935, which is, however, a recreation.
The delegation of young cars (from 1992 onwards) is twice as large as the pre-war fraction, including a BMW Z8, a Porsche 993 Turbo S from 1997, a Ferrari F355 Spider from 1995 and a Hummer H1 from 1996.
The Ferrari 512 TR from 1992, one of two prototypes (or pre-production cars) for the US market, is certainly something special. At USD 275,000 to 325,000, this fact and the low mileage are paid homage to.
E-Type in a multipack
Bonhams can bring five Jaguar E-Types under the hammer, four of which are from the popular Series 1.
The oldest car even comes with external hood latches (and a flat floor) and left the factory in July 1961. This fact is taken into account with the estimated value of USD 380,000 to 480,000.
A 1963 E-Type Coupé can be purchased for USD 130,000 to 170,000, a later 4.2-liter Coupé for USD 225,000 to 275,000.
A Series 2 Roadster from 1971 for USD 65,000 to 85,000 seems cheap in comparison.
Large Aston Martin selection
The Aston selection is also extensive, ranging from a DB Mk III from 1959 to a DB AR1 Zagato Roadster from 2003. All Astons are sold without a reserve price.
A DB4 from 1962 is expected to sell for as little as USD 250,000 to 300,000, while a DBS from 1968 is expected to fetch USD 80,000 to 120,000.
300 S from the barn
One of the stars of the auction is the Mercedes-Benz 300 S Roadster from 1953. One of 141 roadsters built, it was only recently rediscovered in a "barn".
Now a restoration is probably on the cards, to which must be added the cost of buying the car, expected to be between USD 375,000 and 475,000.
Exotic
Those who like to buy off the beaten track could take a closer look at the 1961 Devin SS.
However, the car was sold as a kit at the time and fitted with a Chevrolet engine by the first owner. The suspensions came from Jaguar, the transmission from GM. Now USD 100,000 to 130,000 is the asking price.
The Apollo 5000 GT from 1964 is expected to be even more expensive. The estimate here is USD 175,000 to 225,000, but after all, the car originally belonged to Milt Brown, the founder of Apollo. According to Bonhams, this is the second-to-last of 76 Apollo sports cars built and the car is said to have covered only 4000 miles.
Movie cars are popular, and the 1949 Buick Roadmaster Convertible from the movie "Rain Man" (Dustin Hofmann, Tom Cruise) should be no exception. The estimated value is USD 150,000 to 250,000.
Not too many OSI 20M TSs are likely to have found their way to the USA. The 1967 coupé on offer is said to be one of no more than 200 surviving examples and, despite being repainted, was probably left fairly original. The consignor now wants USD 60,000 to 80,000.
Slightly more expensive, but hardly less elegant, is the 1953 Nash-Healey Le Mans Coupé, whose body was designed by Pinin Farina. A total of 100 Nash-Healeys with a closed body are said to have been built. USD 75,000 to 125,000 should be enough to acquire this beautifully presented car.
Further information and many pictures of the individual vehicles can of course be found on the Bonhams website.
