The Grand Prix Historique Monaco, an internationally acclaimed event that only takes place every two years and looks back on the history of the famous city circuit, certainly provides a suitable setting for the auction of rare racing and sports cars.
On May 11, 2018, Bonhams will go under the hammer for the 28th time in Monaco, with Villa La Vigie providing the perfect setting.
53 cars are on offer alongside a number of automobiles and stylish children's cars, with a total value of over EUR 25 million (CHF 31 million), meaning that on average almost half a million euros per vehicle will change hands.
A good third (36 percent) of the vehicles will be knocked down without a minimum bid.
Comparatively young
On average, the cars are just under 44 years old, i.e. still relatively young. Just two pre-war vehicles are on offer, a Bentley 8-Litre Tourer from 1931 and a Horch 853a Sportcabriolet from 1939.
Almost a quarter of the cars, on the other hand, are not even youngtimer age, the youngest, a Fiat 500 Jollycar from 2017 in the style of the beach cars of the sixties, is practically a new car.
But even a Porsche 964 RS (1992), a Bugatti EB 110 GT (1993) or a Mercedes-Benz E500 (1995) would have been "normal" used cars just a few years ago.
Two ex-Senna
The star of the auction will be the 1993 McLaren-Cosworth MP4/8A in which Ayrton Senna won the 1993 Monaco Grand Prix. Described as the most important McLaren ever to be traded at auction, the fully functional monoposto will be offered with exactly the same technical components that racing god Senna drove in Monte Carlo at the time.
An estimated value is not officially communicated by Bonhams, but it is obvious that one can speculate on a high single-digit million value.
The Formula 1 car in which Ayrton Senna made his debut at the Monaco Grand Prix will be considerably cheaper. The 1984 Toleman-Hart TG184 would almost have won the race had it not been stopped early due to rain, which gave Alain Prost the victory. EUR 750,000 to 1 million (CHF 900,000 to 1.2 million) is given as the estimate.
The Formula 3 of Ronnie Peterson
A Tecno 69 from 1969, whose steering wheel was once turned by the extremely talented Ronnie Peterson, is considerably cheaper than the F1 cars.
Among other things, Peterson won the Monaco Formula 3 GP in 1969, as well as 15 other races. Impressive! EUR 80,000 to 120,000 seems quite reasonable.
8 Ferrari, 8 Mercedes, 6 Porsche
It is the expected brands that dominate the Monaco auction. Eight Ferrari sports cars, including an elegant 250 GTE Coupé from Switzerland from 1963, an early Berlinetta Boxer and a Formula 1 car F1/87 are among the more expensive cars in the auction.
The most valuable Ferrari, however, is the Barchetta 625 TF Spider Vignale from 1953, which is expected to find a new owner for EUR 4.5 to 6.5 million.
The eight Mercedes-Benz vehicles include practically the entire SL family tree, 300 SL, 190 SL, Pagoda, R107, R129, supplemented by an E500 from 1995 and a 300 d Adenauer from 1958.
Porsche is not missing a 911 Carrera RS 2.7 (Touring) from 1973, a 964 RS from 1992 or an almost modern 997 GT3 RS 4.0. A 964 Turbo 3.6 from 1993 is estimated at a relatively high EUR 250,000 to 300,000.
Many super classics
Maserati Ghibli 4.9 SS (1971), Fiat Dino 2400 Spider (1970), Lancia Aurelia B24S Convertible (1956) or Citroën 2DV Sahara 4x4 (1962) are just some of the super classics on offer at Bonhams.
Other cars are more unusual, however, such as the 1955 Jaguar XK140 SE Michelotti Coupé, which is being offered for EUR 20,000 to 50,000 in pitiful condition, or the 1974 BMW 2002 Turbo, which is expected to cost EUR 80,000 to 120,000 with correctly mirrored Turbo lettering on the front spoiler.
It's also cheap
As many as 24 cars have estimated values below EUR 100,000, the majority of which are offered without a reserve price. So a buyer may still be able to get a bargain if he bids for a 1965 Fiat 600D Multipla (EUR 25,000 to 35,000) or a 1968 BMW 2000 CS (EUR 35,000 to 55,000).
Further information, many pictures and the digital auction catalog can be found on the Bonhams website.
