Once again, Bonhams will not only open the 2019 auction year on January 17, 2019, but also the series of major international auctions in Scottsdale. 120 interesting cars are on offer. They represent a value of around USD 40.7 million. Almost USD 354,000 is expected per car.
Willingness to take risks
An impressive 96 cars, i.e. 83 percent of the offer, are offered without a minimum price. These are not only specially priced classics, but also cars such as a Mercedes 500K or a Porsche 911 S 2.4.
Porsche before Mercedes
The offer is certainly European in character. Porsche has the largest contingent with 19 cars, followed by Mercedes-Benz with 16, Jaguar and Ferrari with 8 cars each. A total of 45 brands are represented, many of them with only one vehicle.
The average age is 51 years.
The oldest car is a Stevens-Duryea Model DD Tourer from 1914, the newest a Bugatti Chiron (USD 2.8 to 3.3 million). A total of 17 cars have not yet reached youngtimer age.
Rare Maserati A6G/2000 Spider from Frua
It is no coincidence that the Maserati A6G/2000 Spider from 1951, with bodywork by Pietro Frua, adorns the catalog cover. Only three such convertibles were built in the 1950s and they are welcome guests at beauty contests around the world. Chassis 2017 was shown in Pebble Beach, Villa d'Este and at the Quail Concours, among others.
The next owner is expected to spend USD 2.8 to 3.4 million on the elegant Maserati.
Concours and race-winning Ferrari 500 Mondial
The Ferrari 500 Mondial Series 1 Spider with chassis number 0438 MD was built in 1954.
Driven by Phil Hill and Richie Ginther, among others, during its active period, the open sports car also won a category victory at Pebble Beach.
Bonhams does not officially state an estimated value, but one can assume high seven-figure sums if that is enough.
Green Porsche 904
The Porsche 904 with chassis number 904 012 was built in 1964. As with the other plastic sports cars in this series, the car was fitted with a four-cylinder Carrera engine. However, this was later removed, but is said to still exist. It was replaced by a two-liter six-cylinder boxer engine like the last factory 904. 904 012 was used in racing in the USA and is said to have survived its active career largely unscathed.
Now priced at USD 1.4 to 1.6 million, this is certainly not a modest price for a 904.
Many super classics
Of course, Bonhams in Scottsdale can offer a considerable number of super classics.
The Lamborghini Miura SV from 1971 will certainly generate a lot of interest. Chassis 4976 covered just 18,300 miles in its lifetime. The engine was replaced in the very first year. Although the mid-engined sports car no longer shines in its original silver, the Blue Notte looks pretty good on it too. The estimated value is USD 1.7 to 2.1 million.
The Mercedes-Benz 300 SL from 1955 with chassis number 198.040.5500548 is expected to be somewhat cheaper. The silver gullwing is offered for USD 1.15 to 1.35 million.
The Maserati Ghibli SS from 1972 is an even more affordable super classic. Chassis AM115/49-2126 is expected to cost USD 260,000 to 300,000, complete with original interior and matching numbers.
With half the number of cylinders, but with an open roof, a Porsche 356 B Carrera 2 GS Cabriolet from 1963 is designed to impress. Chassis 158183 was valued at USD 1.1 to 1.3 million.
The super classics should also include the three blue Bugatti models, which cover practically every phase of the famous brand's life: a Type 46, an EB 110 and a Chiron.
Exotic cars from all over the world
Everyone knows a 300 SL or a Maserati Ghibli, but who knows the Sabra GT? Only 379 were built, 171 of them in Haifa (Israel). A surprisingly high number of 81 were exported to Belgium, one of which is chassis GT4819.
It has survived and has been completely restored, which is now to be rewarded accordingly with USD 80,000 to 100,000.
Bill Devin's plastic sports cars are hardly better known than the Sabra GT. The car on offer has a Devin body mounted on an Austin-Healey chassis. A Pontiac V8 with around 225 hp was installed as the engine, which was intended to enable fairly rapid driving performance.
USD 50,000 to 70,000 is expected for this car.
The Crosley CD Four Super Convertible from 1951 is an American veteran. By local standards, the Crosley was a Mini, but the cars were innovative. After all, the first American engine with an overhead camshaft was available from Crosley.
The model on offer with an open roof is expected to cost USD 15,000 to 25,000.
The Fiat Moretti 500 from 1969 is similarly small and hardly more expensive. It looks like a shrunken copy of Bertone's Sima 1000, but has to make do with 650 cm3 and 50 hp.
USD 20,000 to 30,000 is the asking price.
The last car at Bonhams' Scottsale auction will be a 1961 Elva Courier.
Equipped for participation in historic motorsport events, the plastic roadster promises a lot of fun for USD 45,000 to 55,000.
