Every year, the classic car fair Auto e Moto d'Epoca attracts not only enthusiasts and collectors from Italy, but also from Switzerland, Germany and Austria, as well as many other countries. This provides an opportunity to use the public's interest for an auction, which Bonhams did for the first time in 2017.
On October 27, 2018, the Padua auction will take place for the second time and the Bonhams team has worked hard to put together an attractive selection of 59 vehicles (including a boat).
In the mid-price segment
With vehicles worth a total of EUR 5.6 million (CHF 6.3 million) and an expected average price per lot of EUR 94,093 (CHF 107,268), the Padua auction is in the mid-price segment. 13 lots will be called without a reserve price.
Alfa Romeo, Fiat, etcetera
A total of 58 cars from 23 manufacturers are on offer, Alfa Romeo is represented by seven cars, Fiat by six, Ferrari by five and Maserati by three. The Porsche contingent is even larger, however, with eight vehicles, while BMW has four and Mercedes-Benz two. There are hardly any truly exotic brands in the Padua range.
The average age of the vehicles is 47 years; only two cars, a Fiat 1500 Cabriolet by Viotti from 1937 and a Horch 830 BL Cabriolet from 1939, date from before the Second World War. However, the range of vintages extends right up to the current decade.
Unique Alfa Romeo 155 GTA
Alfa Romeo won the Italian Touring Car Championship (DTM) with the Alfa Romeo 155 in 1992 and the German Touring Car Championship (DTM) in 1993.
It was therefore a logical step, similar to BMW with the M3 or Mercedes-Benz with the Evo models of the 190E, to bring out a fast road car based on the Alfa Romeo 155.
With a lot of (all-wheel) technology from the Lancia Delta HF Integrale and a widened body, the car would have been expensive, but also a hit.
However, only a prototype was created in 1993, which was presented at the Bologna Motor Show and used as the company car of racing doctor Sid Watkins at the Italian Grand Prix in 1994, but never went into production.
The Alfa bosses wanted a V6 engine, the sales people wanted a more attractive price.
The prototype was eventually sold and ended up with a collector. The speedometer now shows around 40,000 km. EUR 180,000 to 220,000 (approximately CHF 210,000 to 250,000) was the estimated value and is probably quite realistic.
The cars of the stars
Bonhams can offer two cars from movie stars in Padua. The first is the Jaguar XK 140 SE from 1956, which once belonged to Anita Ekberg. Her bath in the Trevi Fountain in "Dolce Vita" is likely to remain unforgettable.
The fully restored Jaguar was estimated at EUR 180,000 to 220,000, so a little star fame is certainly in the cards.
Karin Dor became internationally famous for her performance in the James Bond film "You Only Live Twice", and is known to Winnetou fans as Ribanna.
The German actress with the big eyes also appeared in many crime thrillers. And until her death in 2017, she drove a white Mercedes-Benz 300 SL from 1987, which now has 128,000 km on the clock.
Estimated at EUR 30,000 to 40,000, the purchase price realized is to be used for good causes, with the car being auctioned with no reserve price.
Charming BMW coupés
Bonhams has two 635 variants from BMW to offer on October 27, 2018, a 635 CSi from 1982 and an M635 CSi from 1986 with the famous M1 engine. The estimated values are within the usual range.
A previously rare guest at auctions is the BMW i8, which Bonhams is offering in the coupé version from 2014.
An estimate of EUR 75,000 to 100,000 is given here, but the hybrid sports car will be handed over to new hands without a minimum price.
Three E-Types
Two Series 1 E-Types and a Series 3 V12 Roadster feature in the Bonhams catalog for the Padua auction.
The flat-floor roadster from 1961 is the most expensive of the three at EUR 200,000 to 250,000.
A 1960 Ferrari 250 GT Series II Coupé from Maranello arrives in Padua, estimated at EUR 540,000 to 640,000, making it the most expensive car in the auction.
The two 308 GTB/GTS models are slightly cheaper, one of which is the polyester version we are looking for.
Exotic
Of course, Bonhams in Padua also offers exotic classics, such as the Lancia Fulvia Zagato Coupé from 1971 (EUR 35,000 to 55'000), the Fiat-Abarth Allemano Spider from 1958 (EUR 60,000 to 80,000) or the post-war Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 Sport limousine from 1949 (EUR 100,000 to 130,000).
The NSU Sport Prinz from 1966 is also an exotic car - at least in Italy (EUR 15,000 to 25,000).
