At "Les Grandes Marques du Monde au Grand Palais 2025" in Paris on February 6, Bonhams will auction almost 100 cars with an expected total value of around 30 million euros. This results in a median estimate of 300,000 euros, although 77 lots remain below this value.
Two thirds of the cars are offered without a reserve price, including the two most expensive in the catalog. A Ferrari 166 MM from 1950 and a Ferrari 555 - a Formula 1 racing car with a four-cylinder engine - from 1954 are each expected to fetch between four and six million euros.
Unity at the other end of the price scale too: A 1956 Citroën 2CV and a 1980 VW Iltis have been estimated at between 15,000 and 25,000 euros each.
Take two
Curiously enough, this tendency to pair up runs through the entire catalog. In Paris, for example, you can choose between a Ferrari 400i with and without automatic gearbox, a VW T1 as a bus and double cab or a Porsche Turbo with and without sunroof.
However, the price differences are sometimes enormous. At 30,000 to 40,000 euros, the self-shifting Ferrari is expected to cost a maximum of half of the minimum price for the manual transmission (80,000 to 120,000 euros). Dispensing with the Porsche sunroof triples the price: 350,000 to 450,000 for the ice-green 1975 model instead of 100,000 to 150,000 for the silver-grey 1976 model. The utility value surcharge for the craftsman's VW (50,000-70,000 euros) is comparatively moderate (40,000-60,000 for the bus).
Fans of Italian cars also have a choice. Would you prefer the Alfa Romeo Sprint Speciale as a Giulia (70,000-90,000 euros), or would the Giulietta (90,000-110,000 euros) with a smaller engine suffice? Would you prefer the two-seater Zagato-Lancia based on the Fulvia (40,000-60,000 euros) or the Appia (80,000-100,000 euros)? And the four-seater V12 Ferrari better as the 330 GT 2+2 (220,000-260,000 euros) or the 365 GT 2+2 (140,000-200,000 euros)?
Peugeot convertibles are offered on the basis of the 403 and the 404, whereby the older model known from film and television is considerably more expensive at 50,000 to 70,000 euros than the younger model (35,000-55,000 euros). Anyone interested in a Bugatti Type 35 has the choice between an original, which has been in one hand since 1963 and costs between 900,000 and 1.3 million euros, and a much cheaper replica for 360,000 to 480,000 euros.
German double
With Mercedes-Benz (10 cars) and Porsche (9), two German brands dominate the range ahead of Ferrari and Alfa Romeo (7 each). Of course, there are also interesting pairings among them, such as the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL for 1.1 to 1.3 million euros and the much rarer 300 S Roadster, with 194 examples built, but also significantly cheaper with an estimate of 400,000 to 500,000 euros.
At Porsche, bidders have the choice between a 911 S Targa (90,000-130,000 euros) and a 911 E Targa (70,000-100,000 euros) from the 1970s. The brand from Zuffenhausen is also the youngest car at the auction with a 911 Speedster from 2019. The yellow roadster is expected to fetch between 250,000 and 350,000 euros.
The only Audi in the catalog is the 5000 CS Quattro, with which Bobby Unser set a speed record for four-wheel drive cars at Talladega in 1986. The black one-off is expected to fetch between 100,000 and 200,000 euros. Of course, this German prototype also has a counterpart: one of two prototypes of the Mercedes-Benz CLK DTM AMG, which at 600,000 to 800,000 euros is expected to be significantly more expensive.
Isolated rarities
Of course, there are also many one-offs in the range. For example, the Citroën DS 19 Concorde, which adorned Henri Chapron's stand at the Geneva Motor Show in 1962. The champagne-colored rarity is expected to fetch between 100,000 and 150,000 euros.
