The 48th AvD Oldtimer Grand Prix (August 7 - 9, 2020) can take place. After the responsible authorities approved the infection protection and hygiene concept developed by the Nürburgring and AvD, the green light has been given for the traditional historic racing event, which, however, may only take place without spectators for the time being. The concept is designed to allow a short-term response to the current pandemic situation. The organizers therefore hope that the green light for visitors can still be given in the remaining three weeks.
The timetable has also been largely finalized. It is now certain that almost a dozen starting fields will be on show in thrilling races and special heats. They will offer a journey through motorsport history ranging from the pre-war racing cars to the Formula 1 cars of the 70s to 90s. Information on the 48th AvD Oldtimer Grand Prix is available at www.avd-ogp.de.
Strict conditions
In times of the corona/Covid-19 pandemic, strict hygiene regulations also apply at the AvD Oldtimer Grand Prix: distancing rules, open grandstand seating, mandatory wearing of masks in many areas - the safety of all participants is the top priority. For this reason, the Nürburgring and organizers are planning without spectators for the time being, but are still in close contact with the authorities to examine options. Strict conditions will also apply in other areas, meaning that team sizes will have to be limited and even media representatives will not be able to be accredited as in previous years.
However, even though the otherwise unique flair at the track will not be the same and the financial risk will increase due to the lack of spectator income, the organizer consortium consisting of Automobilclub von Deutschland (AvD), C.H.R.S.N., Histomobil and HMSC came to the decision to hold the weekend.
The organizers want to support the series, teams and active participants and offer them a platform to use the historic sports and racing cars in their very own terrain on the race track. Despite all the restrictions that will certainly distinguish the 48th AvD Oldtimer Grand Prix from the series of its predecessors, the organizers are confident of offering an attractive programme for racing cars from 100 years ago. In addition to historic touring cars and GTs, formula cars and, of course, sportscars and prototypes, the modern race cars of the International Audi R8 LMS Cup and the FCD Racing Series with their historic and modern Ferrari racers will be present as well.
Jacky Ickx in the original Formula 1 Ferrari
This year's three-day meeting of classic racing cars at the Nürburgring will offer both old and new highlights for the drivers. This becomes clear on Saturday, for example, when the DRM revival race kicks off the evening program: together with the 100-Mile Trophy, the cars of the former German Racing Championship are traditionally a motorsport festival.
This will be followed by a new race: The one-hour AvD Touring Car and GT Trophy. Here, the era of classic endurance races 'with a roof over your head', which have a long tradition at the Nürburgring, will be revived.
The day concludes with the two-seater racing cars and GTs up to 1960/61, featuring dream sports cars and GT legends that once contested the great classics such as the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
Another new highlight is the special race for Formula 1 legends from the 70s to 90s, in which Ferrari models in particular will be competing. In one of them, the Belgian Jacky Ickx, a genuine Formula 1 star of the past, will be at the wheel, driving the very car he drove in the 1972 Grand Prix at the Nürburgring.
The weekend will also be varied in other respects and will probably be themed "Back to the Roots": Because in the mid-1970s, the predecessor of the AvD Oldtimer Grand Prix was created primarily as a driving event for the owners of classic vehicles. This will come to life again on this race weekend - because the AvD OGP Trackday on Friday is once again part of the program. The driving event on the Nordschleife is open to sportscars and historic vehicles.
