At some point, enough is enough, André Trigano said to himself. At over 90, other things become important. Four years ago, the senior had around 50 Citroëns auctioned off by Artcurial, and now almost 170 more automobiles that he acquired during his active collecting days will follow. A number of model cars, children's cars and automobilia will also go under the hammer.
A real collector
André Trigano fell in love with cars at an early age. He took part in the Tour de France, in Le Mans and also in the Monte Carlo Rally, which he could even have won. He was a camping pioneer when he expanded his father's tent business and made it flourish. And he was a politician for decades. But his love of cars never waned, so after his racing career he began collecting cars of all kinds. He was particularly fond of the elegant cars of the 1930s, but he also had a soft spot for beautiful sports cars.
Over time, he collected well over 200 cars, which he maintained and restored with a team of three specialists. A veritable museum was created. A few cars were always moved at the weekend, but this became increasingly difficult as he got older. His descendants showed little interest in the old cars, which required a lot of maintenance, and so Trigano decided to sell the collection. On September 13, 2020, after the Citroëns, which were already sold in 2016, the remaining classics will now be auctioned off.
165 real cars
In addition to some model and children's cars, a camper van, a boat and two real buses, a total of 165 cars will go under the hammer. The average age is 66 years, with 70 vehicles dating back to the pre-war period.
Only five cars with a reserve price
Only five cars are offered with a reserve price; for all others, the new owner is the one who pays the most, regardless of how high their offer was. This even applies to the Porsche 911 SC 3.2 from 1986 (estimated value EUR 50,000 to 70,000) or the Iso-Rivolta IR300 from 1966 (EUR 45,000 to 65,000).
Only the Lancia Aurelia B24 S from 1957 (EUR 200,000 to 250,000), the Facel Vega HK 500 from 1960 (EUR 120,000 to 160,000), the Rolls-Royce Phantom V from 1962 (EUR 100,000 to 150,000), the Aston Martin DBS V8 from 1970 (EUR 90'000 to 130,000) and the Lamborghini 400 GT 2+2 from 1967 (EUR 400,000 to 600,000) call for a minimum bid, which is likely to be somewhere near the lower estimate, but will of course not be communicated.
A first-hand Lamborghini 400 GT 2+2
Trigano bought the Lambo with chassis number 01231 when it was new because he liked the shape and because it was a great highway car. He hasn't given it up since. Newly painted, it still looks almost as good as new, which is not surprising given that it has only covered 33,800 kilometers. During a test drive with André Trigano, he is reported to have said: "Cette voiture représente 50 ans de ma vie!"
Only 247 examples of the 400 GT model were built, making it correspondingly rare. A first-hand vehicle like this is probably even rarer.
Fear of damage
Almost all Trigano cars are museum vehicles, i.e. some of them have not been driven for years.
Accordingly, Artcurial also notes that the cars are sold as they are and require recommissioning, in many cases a complete overhaul, before being driven on public roads. Bidders should simply keep this in mind.
French exotics non-stop
What certainly makes Trigano's collection exceptional are the many French rarities from the 1920s to 1950s that are coming under the hammer.
Who has ever seen a Matford or a Mathis?
And Hotchkiss, Berliet, Chenard & Walcker, Licorne, Rosengart or Unic were not exactly among the brands you often come across.
In Gibel, however, 3 Amilcar, 1 Benjamin, 4 Berliet, 7 Hotchkiss and 10 Simca come under the hammer, to name just a few examples.
While some of these cars have been completely restored, others are more likely to be wrecks or barn finds. However, the estimated values seem quite moderate.
Special features of Ligier and Peugeot
Most people know Ligier from Formula 1 and as a sports car manufacturer. But from 1980 onwards, Ligier also built light cars, some of which could even be driven without a driver's license.
One of these was the JS4 from 1980, which is offered for EUR 500 to 1000 and has a mileage of just 3705 km.
The Peugeot 106 Electric from 2001 is practically a new car with 6134 km on the clock. As a politician, Trigano wanted to promote electromobility and bought the Peugeot himself, which is still practically in its original condition today.
An estimated value of EUR 50 to 100 is given, which may be due to the missing batteries. But even without the battery pack, bidders are likely to want to go much higher.
Also BMW and Volkswagen
Trigano's collection also contained many non-French cars, and he was particularly taken with the Americans.
But if you comb through the lot list, you will also come across a VW 1303 Cabriolet from 1973 (EUR 12,000 to 16,000) and a 1300 saloon, a BMW 750iA, a 2000 CS (EUR 15,000 to 20,000) or a Riley RMB from 1950.
Youngtimers too
Although Trigano's love was for pre-war cars and cars from the 1950s, he still bought cars right up to the modern era, which he simply kept after active use.
This certainly explains the Audi TT 1.8 T from 2001 or the VW Phaeton W12 from 2004. There is also a Renault Vel Satis V6 3.0 L from 2002 or a Renault Clio Baccara from 1992.
