For the third time, the French auction house Artcurial is organizing an auction on the occasion of the Le Mans Classic. Some rarities that have never been publicly traded before will go under the hammer, from A for Alpine to T for Tyrrell.
114 vehicles with a total value of around 17 million euros (CHF 20.5 million) will be offered by Artcurial on July 5, 2014, with each vehicle costing an average of approximately 150,000 euros (CHF 180,500). 23% of the lots will be knocked down without a reserve price.
Special collections
Artcurial was already able to offer an Alfa Romeo collection at the Rétromobile, and now several collections are for sale, including a compilation of Porsche 993 models, a Lancia collection with eleven vehicles from an Italian dealer in Perugia and a Jaguar selection from a French enthusiast.
Racing cars with Le Mans history
50 years after its start and 18th place overall at Le Mans, an AC Cobra 289 is returning to the Sarthe to be auctioned by Artcurial. It was driven by Count Jean de Moremart and Régis Fraissinet in 1964. It is now said to be worth between 1.3 and 1.7 million euros (CHF 1.59 and 2.1 million).
The DB Panhard HBR5 from 1959 is a much cheaper way of acquiring a Le Mans participant from 1959 to 1961. If the estimated price is set correctly, 120,000 to 160,000 euros will be enough to buy this special car, which was restored a few years ago, at auction.
And for those who prefer to buy a vehicle in which they can camp out in style on the racetrack, there is the 1982 Airstream Classic 310, which even has a Kenwood blender and a waffle iron on board.
Mysterious Ferrari 308 GTS with plastic bodywork
After Ferrari had built the first 308 GTB (B for Berlinetta) with GRP bodies, they soon switched to sheet steel. All production Targa models, commonly called GTS, had sheet steel bodies. Apparently, however, prototypes of the upcoming GTS model were still constructed with plastic bodies. Five of these test cars are said to have been produced, one of which apparently passed into private hands, has no chassis number and a wet sump lubrication system aimed at the US market.
This probably unique 308 GTS from 1976 is now expected to cost 95,000 to 105,000 euros (CHF 115,900 to 128,100), which seems reasonable in view of its rarity value, although the car is obviously in need of restoration.
Beutler special body on Jaguar Mk VII chassis
On the Beutler stand in 1953 was an aluminum-clad convertible on the chassis of a Jaguar Mk VII. The shape was ahead of its time and featured pontoon elements. Apparently the car is in drivable condition, but has been little used in recent years and could not be fully inspected.
With an estimated price of 60,000 to 80,000 euros (CHF 73,200 to 97,600), the elegant convertible appears to be reasonably priced, as it would certainly be a welcome guest at many a Concours d'Elégance.
20 Lancias
With 20 Lancias, the Italian brand dominates the fleet of cars assembled by Artcurial. The spectrum ranges from a Lambda from 1927 to a charming Delta Integrale HF Evo I with Martini paintwork, but also includes some Berlinas and a Thema 8.32 that has probably only rarely been seen at auctions. There is something for almost every wallet, with estimates ranging from 4,000 to 350,000 euros.
A Lancia Stratos from 1978 was estimated at between 280,000 and 320,000 euros, while the Aprilia Cabriolet Speciale by Pininfarina from 1946 was estimated at between 300,000 and 400,000 euros.
The other exotics
In addition to the Porsche 911 Carrera RS, Jaguar E Type, Mercedes Benz 300 SL and Ferrari F40, which are almost standard offerings, Artcurial also has less orthodox exotic cars up for auction, such as a Honda S800 Coupé from 1969 (Euro 16'000 to 24,000), a Jaguar XJ 220 from 1992 (Euro 150,000 to 200,000), an AC Aceca from 1957 (Euro 60,000 to 70,000) or a Riley Nine Kestrel limousine from 1934 (Euro 35,000 to 50,000).
The BMW M635 CSi from 1984, which is being offered for between 25,000 and 35,000 euros (CHF 30,500 to 42,700) with no reserve price, could be of interest to fans of more recent classics.
And fans of French automobiles might be tempted by the Citroën CX 2400 i Prestige from 1979 (Euro 35,000 to 45,000) or the Facel Vega HK 500 from 1960 (Euro 130,000 to 160,000, or CHF 158,600 to 195,200).
There is not something for everyone at Artcurial, but the selection is certainly considerable. It will be interesting to see how valuable Maître Poulain will make his cars at Le Mans.
