Artcurial will be auctioning off a large quantity of automobiles and automotive art on July 2, 2022. A child's car, 134 life-size cars, an engine and a caravan with a total value of around 17 million euros are to find a new owner as part of the Le Mans Classic, alongside motorcycles and automobilia. The offer is French-influenced and, in keeping with the occasion, includes a large number of historic racing cars. In addition to some super classics, there is an almost unbelievably large number of French rarities in barn-find condition for sale.
French formula cars
Four Formula 1 cars from the 1980s and 1990s from the Renault collection will go under the hammer at Le Mans. However, only the oldest example is drivable. The Williams FW15 and Benetton B197 are purely exhibition pieces with incomplete technology. The estimated price is correspondingly low at 40,000 to 80,000 euros each. The Tyrrell 015 with an equally incomplete drivetrain is somewhat more expensive at an estimated 150,000 to 250,000 euros.
The Renault RE40 from 1983 shows just how much driving pleasure and prominent "previous ownership" can make. Alain Prost's former racing car is significantly more expensive at an expected 800,000 to 1,200,000 euros.
Dusty beauties
Also unroadworthy is a collection of French barn finds, including six Talbot-Lago T26s, three Delahaye 135 Ms and two Hotchkiss 686s. Despite their mostly desolate condition, the dusty luxury cars could fetch high prices. The Talbot-Lago T26 GSL from 1954, of which only fragments remain, is the most expensive of them and has been estimated at 150,000 to 200,000 euros.
Also part of this collection, but considerably cheaper, is the Hotchkiss-Grégoire. No fewer than six of the quirky front-wheel drive saloon (and thus a tenth of all surviving examples) are to be auctioned at Le Mans. The prices are between 1500 and 8000 euros and thus represent the lower limit of the auction.
The Salmson 2300 Sport for 4000 to 6000 euros is also in this price range. However, anyone interested in the 1956 Tracta-Grégoire sports coupé should expect to pay between 60,000 and 80,000 euros.
Many Porsches, expensive Porsches
According to expert estimates, the most expensive lot in the auction will be a Porsche 935 "Baby" L1, which is expected to fetch between 1.3 and 1.6 million euros. The fact that the car competed in the 1981 24 Hours of Le Mans certainly plays a significant role in this value. With 16 cars, Porsche is the most represented brand at the auction, followed by Renault.
Of course, Artcurial also offers more down-to-earth items, such as an unrestored Triumph Spitfire Mk3 or a Triumph TR4 that has been with the same owner since 1966. Between 16,000 and 24,000 euros are expected for the roadster, which is also still in its original condition (apart from the highly unsuitable exterior mirrors).
With an average estimated price of 123,000 euros, Porsche 911, Dino 246 GT and Jaguar E-Type in several examples form the "midfield" of the offer. The Aston Martin DB6 Vantage from 1967 is significantly higher at 250,000 to 320,000 euros.
Aluminum and GRP
French curiosities tend to be in the lower price segment, but that doesn't make them any less exciting. The "Lechelle" based on the Renault 4CV proves that buggies do not necessarily have to be built on a Beetle chassis. The Renault Le Car Van by Heuliez imitates the style of US "conversion vans" with a porthole, external spare wheel and rainbow decals and is expected to fetch 22,000 to 28,000 euros.
Two decades earlier, the Airstream Globetrotter marked the pinnacle of automotive homeliness. The 1950 example on offer is remarkably original, right down to the turquoise-colored holiday oven, and was estimated at 60,000 to 100,000 euros. Unfortunately, the Artcurial offer lacks a matching towing vehicle in the form of a 1950s road cruiser.
Plastic bodies in two very different styles are offered by the Ferrari 308 GTB Vetroresina and the Teilhol Tangara. The Ferrari is expected to cost between 120,000 and 160,000 euros. The pick-up based on the Citroën 2CV is also something for the small purse at 8,000 to 12,000 euros.
