60 years ago, the Renault 4 rolled into the limelight and started an unparalleled success story. The cult model sold over 8 million units in over 100 countries during its more than 30 years of production and is therefore rightly regarded as an icon.
It was unveiled on October 4, 1961 at the Paris Motor Show. Renault positioned it as a competitor to the Simca 1000 or the VW Beetle. With its functional shape, focus on durability and many practical solutions, the R4 became a bestseller.
Simple, robust and efficient
The body with the round corners was bolted onto a platform frame. This made it particularly easy to maintain and repair, as all important parts could be easily dismantled.
Under the hood was a simple four-cylinder engine, which was installed front and center. It initially produced 23 hp. Over the years, however, Renault gave it small performance upgrades, which ultimately resulted in an output of 34 DIN hp, i.e. around 50% more.
Special program to celebrate
R4 fans should keep an eye on Renault's social networks on the 4th and 14th of each month. Exclusive content made by fans for fans awaits, including interviews with collectors and celebrities. Depending on current events, the official program may evolve and will be supplemented by activities at local level.
In February, graphic designer Greg will kick off the celebrations with illustrations of the Renault 4, showing it in the style of different eras. All his designs will be published gradually over the course of the year. The Renault 4 will also be featured on Renault's social media channels in February, concluding the month with a special edition of the 4, called "Parisienne", on the Champs-Elysées.
In March and April, there will be a special Renault Classic show and a collection of Renault miniatures, which will be available in the Atelier Renault boutique and online store.
The year will also bring a number of other highlights for the Renault 4, such as a special clothing collection, various videos, a new R4 with lots of surprises and much more.
Further promotions will be announced in the course of the year.
