Alexander Arnold Constantine Issigonis, born on November 18, 1906 in Smyrna, became world-famous as Alec Issigonis, later Sir Alec, as an engineer.
The Issigonis family came from the Greek island of Paros and ran a machine factory in Greece. Father Konstantin Issigonis and mother Hulda Prokopp, who came from Bavaria, emigrated to England with their son, Alexander.
Alec Issigonis discovered his technical talent at an early age. After studying at Battersea Polytechnic School, he was employed by Morris.
The global success "Mini"
After the Suez crisis in October 1956, he developed the Mini, which was reduced to the bare essentials. The birth of today's metal icon began with an initial sketch on a tablecloth and napkin.
The space-saving design changed the automotive world and helped it to early fame. As the "Austin Seven/Mini", "Morris Mini", later also in Italy under license from "Innocenti", the small-format car went into series production.
From small car to rally winner
Tuners, such as John Cooper, took it on and paved the way for the car dwarf to enter motor racing. The little car became big with numerous racing successes. The greatest triumph on his account is probably the victory in the mother of all rallies, the "Monte".
Soon pop stars, movie stars and celebrities became aware of the Mini and helped it achieve its current cult status. The Mini was and is trendy!
