Italdesign, once founded by Giorgetto Giugiaro, is celebrating its 50th anniversary. The celebrations will get into full swing with a series of events at the fourth edition of the Turin Motor Show Parco Valentino, which takes place from June 6 to 10. Italdesign's presence at the show will be organized in different locations and at different times so that as many fans as possible can take part in the numerous activities.
Italdesign's latest development will be on display in a national preview starting June 6 and throughout the exhibition along Corso Massimo D'Azeglio.
Pop.Up Next is the next stage of the Pop.Up project: an integrated and flexible solution for sustainable mobility in the cities of the near future. It is the result of Italdesign Development of Integrated Mobility Solutions Department, developed in collaboration with Airbus and Audi. It combines a passenger capsule, a ground module and a flight module to provide a seamless travel experience. Pop.Up Next uses an artificial intelligence system and level 5 autonomous driving standards, is fully battery powered and has an electric propulsion system.
Thirty cars for fifty years of history
Thirty prototypes and production models that have shaped the history of Italdesign and, in many cases, the history of mobility, will be on display in the courtyard of the Castello del Valentino. Visitors will be able to experience authentic legends such as the De Lorean DMC 12, made famous by the Back to the future trilogy, the Golf GTI that was the dream of generations of newly qualified drivers between the seventies and eighties, or the Fiat Panda here in the "Safari" version in the 4x4 Strip concept.
Visitors will also be introduced to a number of prototypes that offered solutions to the traffic problems already prevalent in city centers in the 1980s and 1990s: The Biga (1992) was designed for car sharing, the Megagamma (1978) was actually the first one-box.design vehicle in the history of the car, while the Capsula (1984) proposed a revolutionary idea in which the same chassis could be kept and the vehicle could be converted from a car to a tow truck, ambulance or minibus in just a few simple steps.
The first prototype, which was developed entirely by Italdesign, is also on display. The Bizzarrini Manta, built in just forty days to take part in the 1968 Turin Motor Show, which took place just three months after the company was founded.
Mostra dei prototipi (exhibition of prototypes)
As part of the "Mostra dei prototipi", Italdesign presents the 1:1 scale model of the Alfa Romeo Brera prototype, an elegant yet practical coupé that was awarded the Compasso d'oro in 2002. The Volkswagen W12 model is also on display; the W12 was a concept car that was built in several units and developed between 1997 and 2002. It holds the 24-hour world speed record: an impressive average speed of 322.891 km/h was achieved in 2001.
Italdesign50: The story of an app
The fair was also the occasion for the development of Italdesign50, an app for mobile devices that tells the story of each of the models on display in the courtyard. Visitors can download the app for free in the respective stores and view a factsheet for all the models on display at Castello del Valentino directly on their smartphone. A factsheet in Italian and English gives a brief overview of the history of each vehicle, technical data, curious behind-the-scenes facts, as well as images, preliminary drawings and exclusive videos kept in the Italdesign archives.
The models on display and presented in the app are: Bizzarrini Manta, Golf GTI, Lancia Megagamma, BMW M1, Fiat Panda 4x4 Strip, Italdesign Machimoto, De Lorean DMC 12, Italdesign Capsula, Italdesign Aztec, BMW Nazca C2, Italdesign Biga, Bugatti EB 112, Lamborghini CalàItaldesign Structura, Bugatti 18/3 Chiron, Maserati Buran, Aston Martin Twenty Twenty, Volkswagen W12, Alfa Romeo Brera (prototype), Chevrolet Corvette Moray, Ferrari GG50, Ford Mustang Concept, Italdesign Quaranta, Italdesign Brivido, Italdesign GTZero, Zerouno, Duerta and Pop.Up Next.
June 9 - Fan Club Day
Saturday, June 9 is Fan Club Day: fans of the Fiat Panda, Alfa Romeo Brera, Maserati 3200 G T, VW Golf, Audi TT and BMW Mini will be meeting in the Murazzi region from 9 am. Italdesign was responsible for the technical development of the last two models. Around three hundred people and one hundred and fifty cars are expected from all over Europe. The teams start at 10 a.m. and arrive at the courtyard of the Castello del Valentino after a parade through the streets of the city.
Duerta
Duerta is the second chapter of the Automobili Speciali brand, dedicated to the production of exclusive small series cars.
Duerta - which means "open" in the Piedmontese dialect - is the Targa top version of the Zerouno project, a super sports car with a carbon fiber body, naturally aspirated 5.2-liter engine with 610 hp, which takes the car to a top speed of more than 300 km/h. As with the Zerouno Coupé, production will be limited to just five vehicles.
The Duerta will also take part in the Supercar Night Parade, which starts at 9 p.m. on June 6.
