With the market launch of the Audi S4 based on the 100 C4 model series, a worthy successor to the Audi 200 quattro 20V was in the starting blocks from August 1991. For two months, the S4 was only available as a four-door saloon, followed by the S4 Avant in September 1991. Representatives of the press were able to test drive the newcomer from July 1991.
Fast sedan, sporty station wagon
The four-valve turbocharged engine with five cylinders, familiar from the Audi quattro and the Audi 200 quattro 20V as well as the Coupé S2, had gained a further 10 hp in the S4 and now delivered 230 hp to the crankshaft. This was sufficient for a top speed of 244 km/h. This secured a top position among the fastest saloons in the world.
Procon-ten was just as much part of the standard equipment as ABS, central locking and electric windows.
In Germany, the 1991 saloon cost at least DM 75,950, for which you got a car that sped to 100 km/h in 6.8 seconds, reached 241 km/h and also consumed 15.3 liters per 100 km (according to the AMS test).
Only three years
Until the facelift and the associated renaming of the previous Audi 100 series to "Audi A6" in the summer of 1994, 9286 saloons and 4654 Avant variants of the Audi S4 were produced in the five-cylinder version.
Parallel to the S4, from 1993 there was also the S2 based on the Audi 80 B4 series as a saloon and Avant. The later S4s were basically the successors to these fast four- and five-door models.
