The Porsche 924 didn't have it easy. Although it was modern and comparatively inexpensive to build, it was still not a "real" Porsche for many friends of the company, even though a lot was done to make it better and faster over the course of its career. We show the development steps that led to the Porsche 924 and an early model in many pictures, some of which have never been published before, supplemented by sales literature and other documents.
In 1979, the magazine 'hobby' carried out a long-distance drive with three contemporary sports cars - Alpine-Renault A 310, Porsche 924 Turbo and Datsun 280 ZX. From Stuttgart to Florence and back. The focus was not on a sober comparison test, but on pure experience and emotion. This report summarizes the driving report at the time and shows how people thought about sports cars with 140 to 170 hp back then. Archive pictures show the sports cars in their heyday.
For 1981, Porsche built 17 examples of the Porsche 924 Carrera GTR, a customer racing car that benefited directly from the knowledge gained from the 1980 Le Mans race. A significant proportion of these cars went to the USA, where they were continuously developed and used in racing until the end of the 1980s. This report tells the story of one of these customer GTRs and shows it in historical and current pictures.
The Porsche 924 Carrera GT was built in 1980 as an evolutionary model and basic model for racing homologation in Group 4 in 406 units and sold for DM 60,000 or 58,000 francs. At the time, nobody offered more horsepower per liter of displacement, but despite this top performance and its racing orientation, the Carrera GT was a sports car that was perfectly suitable for long distances. This report describes its characteristics and its history and shows it and its predecessors in over 70 pictures.
The 924 S transaxle coupé is one of the cheapest ways to drive a real Porsche, i.e. a sports car with a Porsche engine. Built between 1985 and 1988, it was the last evolutionary stage of the narrow 924, while the 944 and later the 968 had the same drive layout but were priced higher. From the inside, the differences were relatively minor at the time. This report portrays a Porsche 924 S from 1985 and describes its development.
