When the Porsche turbo appeared in 1974, it was hard to imagine that anyone would ask for even more power. However, demands quickly increased and Porsche realized this in 1977, increasing the displacement by ten percent and the peak power by fifteen percent. For 1981, Porsche built 17 examples of the Porsche 924 Carrera GTR, a customer racing car that benefited directly from the knowledge gained from the 1980 Le Mans race. A significant proportion of these cars went to the USA, where they were continuously developed and used in racing until the end of the 1980s. This report tells the story of one of these customer GTRs and shows it in historical and current pictures.
The Porsche 924 Carrera GT was built in 1980 as an evolutionary model and basic model for racing homologation in Group 4 in 406 units and sold for DM 60,000 or 58,000 francs. At the time, nobody offered more horsepower per liter of displacement, but despite this top performance and its racing orientation, the Carrera GT was a sports car that was perfectly suitable for long distances. This report describes its characteristics and its history and shows it and its predecessors in over 70 pictures.
In 1974, Porsche presented the fastest sports car in the world at the time: the Turbo. It cost around twice as much as a conventional 911 and appealed to customers who might otherwise have bought a Ferrari or Maserati. Those for whom the "normal" Turbo was not exclusive and visually striking enough could also have a variant built at the factory with similarities to the 935 racing car. And double the price again. This report shows one of the rare flat-body variants and tells the story of the racing car for the road on special request.
