When Porsche launched the 911 Turbo, the first European production sports car with a turbocharger, in 1974, the signs on the horizon looked bad with the energy crisis and fears of inflation. But 500 planned units soon turned into thousands and even tens of thousands to date. Eight generations have been built to date, this report compares them and shows the air-cooled ancestors in particular in over 200 pictures.
In 1965, Porsche abandoned the Cabriolet for the time being. It would be 17 years before it was possible to buy a completely open 911 for the first time. But only with the naturally aspirated engine - turbo fans had to wait even longer, even though the 1981 prototype still had a turbocharger. It was not until 1987 that the factory finally delivered the open Turbo to customers. The Carrera 3.2 Speedster from 1989 is one of the rarities in the Porsche 911 line of ancestors. It was only built for a few months and the number of units was correspondingly small. And it looked very different from the other vehicles from Zuffenhausen. As a result, it proved to be very valuable.
