In the seventies, Porsche built nothing but sports and racing cars. And you could feel that in the products. The 911 S 2.4 was a good example of this, as it still did without power assistance for the steering and brakes, but not without a good power-to-weight ratio and a hard chassis. The Porsche 911 with the 2.4-liter engine was only built for two years. As before, they were available as a T, E or S model in three performance levels. Even the cheapest model offered a lot of driving fun and good everyday characteristics and was the most ordered 911 version with almost 4000 carburetor versions produced. Forty years ago, Porsche presented the Carrera RS 2.7 for the first time in Paris to an astonished but eager-to-buy fan community. Even at Porsche, nobody would have believed that 1,580 of these vehicles would be built, and the sales department even had to be persuaded to sell the car! The road car was joined by a pure racing car, the RSR 2.8, followed a good year later by the two RS/RSR 3.0s with a strong racing design. This report summarizes the development of these two vehicles and compares the different brothers in detail in pictures. The article is supplemented by an original brochure, advertising subjects and lots of historical images.
Porsche presented the Carrera RS in 1972. Fearing that the targeted 500 units would not be sold, the minimalist lightweight sports car was sold almost exclusively with a touring or sports package. But the fear proved to be unfounded - 1580 RSs were built. Today, they are worth many times their original price and are among the most valuable 911s ever.
