Around 50 years ago, the first open-top Porsche 911 was created as a prototype based on the 901. This car hardly appears in the literature, as the one-off was not a success and Porsche developed the Targa instead, which was presented in 1965. Today, the first Porsche 911 is often portrayed as the ultimate in German sports car construction and showered with superlatives. An early test report shows: It was no different back in 1965. Even a carburetor that was set too lean and a clunky gearshift could not dampen the test engineer's enthusiasm for the car's roadholding and revving performance. For the 1967 model year, Porsche reduced the standard equipment of the 911 in order to differentiate it more clearly from the new top-of-the-range 911 S model. However, this brought it much closer to the 912, from which it differed only in terms of its larger engine. Although the Porsche 911 remained an outstanding sports car as a result, it was no longer such a tempting proposition in terms of price. This test report from 1966 explains why.
Paul Frère's comparative test, in which the Belgian racing driver and journalist compared the Lamborghini 400 GT with its rivals, the Ferrari 330 GTC and Porsche 911 S, in 1966, comprises almost 30,000 letters. The author was well aware that the Porsche was actually in a different league, but found that the much cheaper car from Zuffenhausen could keep up surprisingly well with the two hot hatches from Italy.
